MANILA, Philippines — Apart from strengthening one’s home from the outside, it is also important to prepare your home’s interiors this rainy season, interior designers told Philstar.com in a recent interview.

The rains might seem gloomy outside, but this mood should not be reflected once you get inside your home, said designer Tom Castañeda.

“What’s important is what happens on the outside that you’re bringing in,” noted Castañeda, who is also SM Home’s Assistant Vice President for Marketing.

The following items, according to Castañeda and fellow designer Nikki Audine, are what one can add or modify inside one’s home to make it more comfortable for the rainy days.

1. A shoe rack near the doorway

To prevent one’s shoes from spreading dirt or mud, make sure a shoe rack is readily available as you enter your home.

2. A good mop

Also have on standby a good-quality mop that you can easily pull out in case dirty feet from the rains enter your home.

3. A little bench near your door

Instead of a shoe rack, you can also put a small bench outside your door, where you can rest to take your shoes off. It would be nice if the bench comes with a storage for wet or muddy shoes.

4. Shaggy and dark rugs

These can absorb water and dirt better than other rugs.

5. Properly sealed floors

Make sure water will not seep in between your tiles.

6. A nice humidifier

A humidifier can help air circulate better especially in small spaces like an apartment or condo.

7. Darker walls, pillows, or plates

These can add warmth to your home’s ambience.

8. Griller

Even if it is rainy outside, Chef Tony Boy Escalante can still enjoy the feel of summer by setting up an outdoor grill, such as Wolf, in a roofed balcony of his house. The brand’s outdoor grill boasts of a unique heating system that allegedly enables one to grill like a pro.

9. Warming drawers

Appliance brand Wolf also has warming drawers that keep steaks and other dishes at ideal temperature for a longer time, especially during rainy days, when food is best enjoyed hot.

10. Reliable washing machine

Washing and caring for clothes could be hard especially during rainy days. As such, appliance brand Electrolux Philippines recently introduced the UltimateCare washer dryer, which FashionCare ambassador Rajo Laurel and FashionCare council members Amina Aranaz-Alunan and Janice Villanueva recently put to the test by putting delicate items like a designer dress, a silk scarf and a wool jacket into the washing machine, which has been equipped with UltraMix technology, reportedly designed to care for sensitive clothes and fabrics.

“As great as it is to offer the widest range of home items, it in no way guarantees that our customers walk out of our stores with a clear idea of how they want to complete their homes, or even what to do with the items they have just purchased,” shared Castañeda on why SM Home recently held a series of interior design vignettes styled by some of the most creative talents in the Philippines.

“There is so much more to making a space functional and beautiful than just choosing and buying great individual items. How items blend together and contribute to the aesthetics or the function of a space are just as important, if not more.”
