Air solutions of the future

Marbbie C. Tagabucba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Human-centric is the keyword. BK Yoon, president and CEO of Samsung’s Consumer Electronics Business, stood before more than 750 global partners and media at the Samsung AC Forum 2015 in Suwon, South Korea and recalled the question that started it all: “How do we achieve greater harmony with the environment around us?”

The quality of our air is a necessary factor, and Samsung knew there was more than one approach to improve it. Samsung sought new perspectives and invited experts from various fields like architecture and healthcare and worked closely with them and used their inputs in creating Samsung’s latest air solutions.

One such industry leader is Russell Brown, a nationally elected member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Council, whose work in designing sustainable yet beautiful spaces for his firm HawkinsBrown represented the collective goal: “A smart community and space for the future.”

Samsung lab leader Hyeong Joon Seo looked to the wind and how both mechanical to natural means manipulated it. “We looked at aircrafts, wind turbines—we broadened our research in various industries on how to control wind,” he shares. This research led to doing away with the blade in an air conditioning unit and replacing it with a booster fan with a circular discharge port. This change maximized airflow by blowing it evenly in all directions, a technology used in Samsung’s breakthrough 360 Cassette air conditioning unit. “You don’t want cool air to hit you directly.” He describes it simply, “It’s like the wind you feel in a cave.”

Architect Chan-Joong Kim, CEO of The_System lab and professor at Kyunghee University, chimes in: “Taking out the blades minimized unnecessary factors in design. While the ceiling-mounted, four-sided Cassette air conditioner is out of the way, (people using the space) aren’t ventilated equally. It also collects dust.”

He takes note of its unique shape. “The circle is the most fundamental shape in nature, but until now, it has only been used decoratively, not for functionality. Designers have preferred to use geometric lines to show power, advancement. Strong straight lines are homogeneity.”

Dochul Choi, senior vice president of Samsung’s Global Business and Tech Strategy, seized this simplified thinking into revolutionary technology. The BLDC Inverter Scroll Compressor improved displacement and velocity due to its asymmetric design that reduces friction loss. Flash Injection increases refrigerant flow. These paved the way to the creation of more compact and energy-efficient outdoor units DVM Chiller for multi-building applications, the next generation DVM S 30HP for high-rise buildings, and new side discharge VRF unit, the DVM S Eco 14HP for multi-room units like a big home or apartments.

“You save more than half of the installation space previously required,” Choi breaks it down, also illustrating how the extra space of a more compact outdoor air conditioning unit can give you means more recreational spaces on the rooftop or basement of an office or school as well as estimating the thousands of dollars of rent money to be made in a commercial building. Mobility is also a big plus. “Instead of container truck and crane, its compact size only requires a truck moved by forklift,” he suggests.

Samsung’s latest air conditioning units are embedded with innovations that target what matters: boosting energy efficiency and performance, maximizing space, and increasing cooling speed.

360 CASSETTE: Design enhances function

The booster fan inside the 360 Cassette guides air to flow in all directions. It consistently controls the temperature of the room.

It’s easy to install without the need for an electrician. It can be fitted within the ceiling or exposed, and customized with a variety of finishes to suit the style of any room. The circular unit is measured at 600x600mm while including side panels for a square shape will result to a measurement of 950x950mm.

Its intuitive display allows users to change the airflow into horizontal, vertical or separate zones through a wheel-dial remote controller. The Samsung Virus Doctor kit can also be added to eliminate dust, airborne contaminants, allergens, bacteria and viruses.

It comfortably cools public spaces like retail stores, libraries, restaurants, or even the family room of your home without compromising style.

DVM S ECO 14HP: A compact solution

Here’s a single outdoor unit for apartment and office buildings that does away with multiple loading and sub-duct installation while being more efficient in cooling and cost.

Its increased horse power (maximum 14HP) means that only one single outdoor unit is needed for the air conditioning needs of an apartment or office building instead of multiple costly units. All areas of the building are covered as the new unit features four-way piping for the convenient installation of extended piping of up to 160 meters and an installation height of up to 50 meters. It’s also compact. The width of the new DVM S Eco 14HP is less than one meter (940mm).

The Inverter Scroll Compressor ensures optimal oil supply and control for greater energy efficiency. The corrugate fin increases air flow compared to standard side discharge VRF units. The new Flash Injection Technology extends the heating operation range to -25°C while the cooling range is widened to 52°C.

SAMSUNG DVM S: Increased high performance capacity

A response to the growing demands from the increasing number of tall high-rise buildings such as in hotels or offices, the Samsung DVM S 30HP features the new Super Inverter Scroll Compressor with Flash Injection Technology. They provide an injection of mixed vapor with liquid refrigerant for increased refrigerant flow density at low ambient temperature.

The new oval-shaped diffuser increases airflow while reducing noise levels by 3dBA. It has also improved the airflow path from 290 to 340 CMM (m³ per min of airflow).

The single 30HP unit measures less than 1m² and weighs 360kg, significantly reducing installation space, while being able to deliver up to 120HP with a combined four modular system.

The Samsung DVM S 30HP is engineered to deliver optimized refrigerant control through the adoption of a reservoir and control of the refrigerant by the use of individual electronic expansion valve (EEVs).

It also complies with safety regulations. When a leak is detected, the system automatically begins an active pump down process to collect the refrigerant and close all valves to isolate it within the unit.

DVM CHILLER: Unrivaled operational economy

Ideal for multi-building spaces like a campus, the DVM Chiller combines an air-cooled chiller with Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) in a compact unit with energy-saving controls.

BLDC Inverter Scroll Compressor with Flash Injection technology ensures increased cooling or heating with greater energy efficiency, reducing annual utility costs by up to 50 percent compared to conventional chillers.

It is more compact than any other module chillers, requiring an installation area of just 1.37m² per unit, maximizing rooftop space and reducing installation and transportation costs. Up to eight modules can be combined to expand system capacity. The operational modes can be adjusted depending on low or peak season.

It also delivers heat while providing cold water through thermal ice storage with a built-in pressure and temperature sensor, which prevents device breakdown from freeze-bursts. By reducing the system refrigerant levels significantly more than a conventional chiller, the Samsung DVM Chiller not only complies with current 2015 EU refrigerant quota levels but also adheres to the further upcoming reduction in levels (35 percent in 2018).
