Pink October

October is recognized around the world  as “Breast Cancer Awareness” month, which is an annual campaign to promote awareness of the disease. During this period people wear pink ribbons to increase consciousness, honor survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and to support the progress that is being done to defeat such illness.

Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, in partnership with I Can Serve Foundation, joins in continuing the fight against breast cancer with its month-long “Waterfront goes Pink” campaign that hopes to raise both awareness and funds against such disease.

The hotel is offering signature pink promotions, dubbed “Fifty Shades of Pink” that features 50 things to do for the 50 great reasons to care. The promo includes a donation to the foundation for every room night stay.

Highlight of the event was the ceremonial lighting of the Waterfront Dome, which  will be illuminated with pink lights from 6 to 10 p.m. for the month of October.

The I Can Serve Foundation is an organization that advocates early breast cancer detection through breast self-examination. Its mission is to arm women with breast care health and breast cancer updates so they can make informed decisions about their health. It also provides access to special services that will help the survivor deal with the effects of both the disease and its treatment, recover and heal more effectively.

Appreciation is at the core of all healthy relationships. Even simple thank you notes validate people and make them feel better about themselves knowing they matter.

In keeping with the tradition of hosting an annual appreciation and birthday bash for members of the local lifestyle media, Cebu City Marriott Hotel hosted an intimate dinner where guests feasted on a sumptuous Greek Mediterranean fare  at the Sampaguita Ballroom.

Warmly welcoming guests who were dressed in classic white and gold to commemorate golden milestones and unforgettable memories were personable general manager Patrick Carroll and director of sales and marketing Cleofe Albiso. They were joined by marketing communications manager Frances Alfafara and marketing communications officer Nico Ivan Velasquez.

The five-course dinner prepared by executive chef Chachpol Suaisom was served on a long beautifully adorned table, which was embellished with candelabras and white and yellow blooms. The meal consisted of grilled rock lobster with citrus fruit salad followed by seared scallops with lemon asparagus, then a mango sorbet with coconut biscuits. Main course was roast beef tenderloin with cauliflower puree and truffle sauce. A watermelon panna cotta was served for dessert.

Adding flair and uniqueness to to event was a collection of paintings by Cebuano veteran artist Mar Vidal that lined the ballroom. This set the perfect  mood for an art appreciation segment of the program, which was facilitated by the artist.

Vidal did a live sketch of Jaime Picornell in 10 minutes, as his daughter, soprano Izarzuri “Zuri” Vidal filled the room with melodic renditions of best-loved classics from famous operas.

After dinner, the media personalities were escorted to the stage to blow out their single candle on individual birthday cakes. And as a birthday gift this year, the framed canvasses by Vidal that adorned the ballroom were given to each of the seven lifestyle media friends, namely Jaime Picornell, Mila Espina, Cookie Newman, Flor Ynclino, Chinggay Utzurrum, Marlinda Tan and the author.
