MANILA, Philippines - Who is this German architect who took over as the master of the Grand-Ducal Saxon School of Arts and Crafts in 1919, transforming it into the Bauhaus?
In moving the school from its home in Weimar to Dessau in 1925, he had the chance to design a headquarters that expressed the principles of Modernist architecture, while creating the perfect working environment for his pupils.
The building was to serve as a training center, workshop and residence. True to the principles of Modernism, he believed that the structures should differ in style according to their various functions.
He separated these areas into three wings — the school and workshop connected via the studio, which is effectively a two-story bridge that spans the road. The studio consists of unbroken glass curtain walls for greater light, and to expose the activity within to external scrutiny. The color scheme also differentiates between the different constructive elements of the building. Much of the tubular-steel furniture was designed by Marcel Breuer.
In 1933, the Bauhaus was closed by the Nazis, and the building suffered heavy bomb damage during World War II. Today, it is fully restored, and once again open as an institution for research and investigative design.
Among the other buildings this German designer designed are the Arbeitsamt (1928-19) and the Torten Housing Estate (1926-28), but the Bauhaus remains one of the largest and most innovative Modernist buildings ever conceived.
