Not just another New Year’s Eve
The New Year’s Eve Costume Ball of the Casino Español de Cebu is an old tradition that long standing members and their guests are more than glad to keep.
This 2015, it was no less spectacular — with drapes in midnight blue, green, silver and gold embellishing the Salon de España ballroom and the color and pageantry of the guests themselves.
Welcomed by president Ed Gonzalez and his lovely wife Therese Gonzalez, together with the rest of the board David Chan and Tess Chan, Edgar Chiongbian and Cely Chiongbian, Louie Moro and Lyn Moro, Paco Jarque and Monique Jarque, families and friends playfully mingled and danced before the big countdown to midnight. The entertainment was provided by the Kanzunetta and the Fire N’ Lites Band.
As is traditionally done, the parade of costumes began at 9 p.m. Under the watchful eyes of the board of judges composed of Dr. Ronald Eullaran, a practicing specialist in the field of internal medicine and rheumatology, lawyer Rudy Montesclaros and Ginalyn Labrada.
Among the winners in the individual category were Adrian Zuluaga as Captain Barboza of the Black Pearl, most colorful, Betty Young in Filipiniana as most elegant and Eduard Loop as a cowboy, most original.
Rafael Zuluaga and Ellen Zuluaga as Snow White and the Prince were voted most colorful couple, Ed Gonzalez and Therese Gonzalez as Spartacus and Lady Sura, most original and Alexander Ho and Josie Ho as Yakuza and Madame Butterfly, most elegant.
Batman and the Villains led by Louie Moro won as most elegant group, the Throwback ‘90s headed by Andre Borromeo was most original and Samba Du Janeiro led by John Domingo was most colorful.
The crowd grew noisier as 2015 approached, and before we knew it, the countdown had begun. Following a collective “Happy New Year y Feliz Año Nuevo” at the stroke of midnight, kisses, hugs and handshakes even among strangers were exchanged. It was a rousing welcome to the next 365 days.
