Who is the Italian designer known for his projects for luxury fashion brands: Ermenegildo Zegna’s corporate headquarters in Milan, Bulgari Hotels in Milan and Bali; the Cerruti flagship store in New York?
He was born in Meda, Italy in 1950, started his design office in 1972, and graduated in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1975. Between 1987 and 1996, he worked in association with Terry Dwan, and and together they created buildings in Japan.
Some of their important works include Esprit’s headquarters in Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Milan; industrial plants for Vitra in Germany and Antonio Fusco in Milan; and the Habitat Store in London.
In 1999, he founded a design firm together with Patricia Viel, and the studio operates at an international level, developing complex long-term projects like urban plans, residential and commercial complexes, industrial establishments, offices, showrooms, and hotels.
Recent projects include the Ermenegildo Zegna’s Group’s corporate headquarters in Milan; Bulgari Hotels in Milan and Bali; residential buildings in Milan and Singapore; and the conversion of the former post office into a major office complex.
He is currently working in the industrial design sector with Italian and foreign companies such as Ansorg, Arclinea, Axor-Hansgrohe, Aubrilam, B&B Iltalia, Flexform, Flos, Fustial, Guzzini, Iittala, Inda, Kartell, the Sanitec Group, Technogym, Tre Pui, and Vitra.
He was won numerous awards for his work:the Compasso d’Oro-ADI Award in 1987 and 1995; and the inclusion of his design “Daycare for the Glaxo Smith Kline Campus” for the Mies van der Rohe Award catalogue and traveling exhibition.
In 2008, he was honored by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of arts, Manufactures, and Commerce in London, which gave him the title of Royal Designer for Industry. He also became part of the Italian Design Council established by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Environmental Conservation.
