A whole New World of luxury in Makati

I am looking at the Makati skyline from a balcony at New World Makati Hotel. There are two things that are unusual about this: one is that very few hotels in the city have balconies, and to me being able to step out on a not-so-warm night is always a bonus, and two is the sheer size of the balcony. One can hold a party out here since it is equipped with lounges, a bar and a sink. In fact, many parties have been held in this balcony, which is attached to the “specialty suite,” the second biggest (130 sqm.) next to the presidential suite (132 sqm.), most of them bridal parties or anniversary parties or simply a girls’ weekend. The living room, dining room and bedroom are very spacious and tastefully appointed with modern Oriental furnishings.

New World Makati’s presidential suite is even bigger with a dining room for eight, a spacious living room and working space. While the two suites were not designed gender-specific, the presidential suite seems more business-like and the specialty suite more relaxed.

This luxury of space, the thoughtful details, the warm colors and rich textures define the new look and feel of the 595-room New World Makati, which began renovations in 2011. You can very much feel this as soon as you step into the hotel lobby with its lotus sculptures. There are no huge chandeliers or overpowering flower arrangements here. Instead, it is a contemporary space where the staircase — grand as it may be — is quietly tucked to one side, the flowers are interspersed with greens in vertical modern arrangements. Very quiet, very Zen and elegant. 

New World general manager Farid Alain Schoucair, who is in his fifth year of heading the hotel, reveals that the investment for the entire renovation is US$40 million (around P1.7 billion). Schoucair, who traces his lineage to Switzerland and Lebanon, is described by his colleagues as one that “combines precision and discipline with a genuine interest for people.  He reflects the warm and engaging disposition one has come to expect from an encounter with a New World Makati Hotel associate.”  Educated in Switzerland, he brings a refined sense of aesthetic to the subtle details that make the guest experience distinctive.

The renovation is led by White Jacket, an international design firm based in Singapore, which followed the design brief of “modern Oriental hospitality.”

“This has been translated into the seamless flow of spaces, clean lines suffused with natural lighting and overhead illumination, and a tastefully modern vibe,” says Schoucair.  “We also worked with local artisans and shops for our pieces. In line with the hotel’s rebranding to New World Makati Hotel, we are refurbishing and upgrading the facilities consistent with the New World Hotels brand.  The first phase has been completed with the introduction of modern and tastefully appointed function spaces, such as the Ballroom, the Glasshouse, the Gallery and the Balcony.  The arrival area, lobby and dining areas have also been renovated and appropriately renamed: Jasmine restaurant, Café 1228, Bar Rouge and Lobby Lounge and Lagoon.  We have also begun to welcome guests into the hushed and private areas of the Residence Club suites and the Living Room lounge.  The newly renovated deluxe rooms are quite popular with corporate and weekend staycationers.  By Christmas time, we expect all the newly renovated guest rooms to be available.”

The timing could not be better. New World has the enviable location of being right across the entrance of Greenbelt 3, giving unparalleled access to the entire Greenbelt complex which is a happening place during the holiday season  and a favorite destination for shopping, concerts and events.
