'Noli' opera premieres in the US
It was one for the books: A Filipino opera sung in Tagalog by an all-American cast in Chicago. Staged at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, the opera version of Noli Me Tangere, Jose Rizal’s first novel originally written in Spanish, counted only six Filipinos out of the 60 singers on the cast. Composed in 1957 by National Artist for Music Felipe Padilla de Leon, the opera produced by KGB Productions and da Corneto Opera was a fitting tribute to the 100th birth anniversary of the late artist. Seen at the reception for the US premiere were Friends of the Arts chief executive officer and honorary chair Loida Nicolas-Lewis, co-chair Isabel Juan, KGB producer Karrel Bernardo, soprano Fides Cuyugan-Asensio, and the multi-cultural Chicago group of actors.
United in diplomacy
Aiming to create a stronger bond between nations, Inner Wheel Club of Manila immediate past president Minerva Tanseco led a hardworking team for a meaningful gathering of the Diplomatic Corps ladies. Held at the Turf Room of the Manila Polo Club, Minerva, committee co-chairpersons Alice Tesoro-Guerrero and Tina Carlos and the ladies came in their colorful national attires to celebrate the diverse culture of each country. It was truly a feast for the eyes to see the ladies being united by their diplomatic goals despite their diverse backgrounds.
