Living life to the fullest with Samsung technology

- Ana G. Kalaw -

MANILA, Philippines - When we were young, we wished for a gadget that would make life easier for us: complete our multiplication tables, clean up our rooms in a snap, transport us into worlds that we could only dream of. Our imaginations ran wild with things this fairy godmother of a gadget could accomplish. We could only imagine a more enjoyable life, free of homework stress and bothersome chores.

Fast-forward a couple of decades later and, even if we don’t realize it, that do-anything gadget is actually within reach, only they’re more than just one gadget, but created by Samsung, that fairy godmother of a brand that just loves to to make our imaginations come to lifecarry out our imaginations.

From handheld phones to Audio Video products to cameras to home appliances, Samsung has made the most of technology and innovation to give us fuller and more fulfilling lives. Math homeworks aside, Samsung helps us clean faster, communicate easier and stand up to the challenges of domestic life much better. And yes, it has even transported us, via the brilliance and lifelike definition of the living room screen, to worlds we never thought existed.

This is life as we imagined. This is life that Samsung has realized.

Flat Panel TVs

There’s no denying the pull of the visual, especially with all these new technologies that amp up what is supposedly a screen that transmits and receives moving images into something beyond what Philo Farnsworth, the inventor of the first working television system, could have ever imagined.

Samsung’s newest Series 8 LED TV is a phenomenal wonder that disseminates images and information all from a razor-thin 1.2-inch deep screen — that’s even slimmer than Mary Kate Olsen. And from this screen, you get picture brilliance and clarity enabled by its a 5,000,000:1 Mega Dynamic Contrast ratio. ,It means that you get rich details and enhanced intensity in every scene of your favorite movies like 300. an incredible range of _brightness.

The biggest draw of Samsung LED TVs, however, is how they work beyond the capacity of a TV. An Internet@TV feature also allows you to conveniently switch from watching daytime drama to viewing videos on YouTube, check out photos on Flickr or just catch upweather updates up to 7 days in any city here or abroad in AccuWeather, or catch up on the Tiger Woods debacle on usatoday.com, all with just a click of the remote. (The TV has a USB port where you can just connect your Ethernet cable or a USB wireless dongle.)

The USB port also makes possible the Multi-media Center feature. Here, you can connect your digital camera, thumb drive or even your MP3 player to easily access videos, playlists and pictures from your computer with your remote – the better to show off holiday documentation to envious relatives.

Another Samsung Series 8 LED TV come-on: a Content Library Flash feature. These boxed wonders now have built-in recipes, games and artwork and information. Sort of like inflight entertainment but in the comfort of your own home. Add more by downloading content online.

Mobile Phones

One source of pride of Samsung’s handheld phone division right niow is the Omnia II, an unapologetic ode to the multi-tasking gadget. It works as a phone, an internet portal, a mini PC and as a multimedia agent, thanks to a huge 3.7-inch crystal-clear AMOLED display (deleted something) (an energy-saving feature that eliminates the use for backlighting), touch-screen technology and a simple screen interface (particularly important if you’re the type who gets lost in a swarm of buttons and icons).

This enhanced display makes the Omnia II’s multimedia functions more enjoyable: video recording and playback similar to DVD standards, easy internet browsing and downloading courtesy of HSUPA 5.6mbps, HSDPA 7.2mbps and Wi-Fi capabilities, and interactive 3D games that are more tech-forward than your regular Snake game. It’s also got has a 5-megapixel camera that dispenses high-quality images which are stored in galleries that let you view photos as if shuffling through a pack of cards.

You’re probably lost with all the acronyms. Point is, Omnia is the ultimate entertainment and communication system on the go. It’s the perfect carry-all for eliminating bored moments. It’s also great for mobile professionals. With its new operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5, accessing and editing your windows-based office documents is a cinch. Plus, viewing websites is a great experience with its full flash support. The fast, response-sensitive Windows Mobile 6.5 application allows you to log-in work-related tasks, via the installed Office Mobile, anytime. Now you can read Word, Excel and PDF documents, or chat up “clients” on Windows Live, even while waiting it out in EDSA traffic.

Digital Cameras

Samsung has always triumphed personality and the individual but none of their products realizes this objective more than their 2View digital camera. This ultra-slim, 12.2 megapixel digital compact camera is the first to put an LCD display in both the back and front of the camera, the latter meant, of course, for taking the perfect self-portrait. In an age of Facebook profiles and self-promotion, no other pixel invention is more welcome!

The hidden 1.5" LCD screen (tap on the front of the camera to reveal) is not just for vanity purposes, though. This cam is loaded with all these amazing features, and one of them is the Children’s Mode: when taking photos of a baby or a temperamental toddler, engaging animation such as a clown appears on the screen in front to keep these babies’ attention focused on the cam. Another feature, the upgraded Timer Mode, makes the use of the front LCD. When the camera is on timer, the screen displays numbers indicating how many more seconds until the flash moment.

Other cool (vanity-inspired) features include the Smart Auto, which analyses key elements of your composition — color, brightness, motion and subject — and then automatically adjusts to take the perfect shot; the Face Recognition, which actually remembers faces it sees frequently and then prioritizes them when focusing in future shots; Blink Detection mode, which will enable camera to take a series of shots when closed eyes are detected, so everyone is captured with their eyes open; and the Beauty Shot mode, rather like a built-in Photoshop that retouches facial skin to three different user-defined levels for brighter and smoother skin tones.

If all these features combined don’t make the perfect portrait, just remember that a camera, even one as smart as the Samsung’s 2View digicam, can only do so much.

Washing Machines

If you only knew how much work and research goes into creating a more efficient washer, then maybe you would think of them as something more than laundry musts that take up so much space. Samsung, at least, has put so much effort into making fully-automatic washing machines that both wash dirt off your clothes and protect them all throughout the washing process.

Samsung’s love/hate relationship with dirt begins with the Air Wash system. New generation washing machines tell us that the washing now doesn’t isn’t restricted solely to water. Air now factors into the cleaning equation, particularly heated, fresh air that removes unpleasant odors and eliminates bacteria. This is how dry cleaning works anyway, which means that those wool suits and sweaters that usually make the trip to the dry cleaners can now be treated at home. So you not only save on water, you save on gas and dry cleaning costs as well.

Adding a new concept of clean to the whole laundry business, Samsung also uses silver technology in their washing machines. The Silver Wash system helps eliminate harmful molds and bacteria that are not removed merely by water-washing. Boiling or using anti-bacterial detergents are traditional processes to rid clothes off resilient bacteria. Boiling, however, is a huge waste of energy, while the latter negatively impacts on the environment.

While air and silver clean, diamonds protect. Samsung washers feature a Diamond Drum system consisting of holes, 75 percent smaller than in conventional drums, that are deeply embossed in diamond-shaped depressions. If your gemstone imagery only runs to Tiffany merchandise, then all you need to know is that the Diamond Drum system prevent the clothes from snagging in the wash, while the embossed pattern creates the ideal environment for a much gentler wash.

All these technologies to make sure you give more time to your family rather than the wash.

Airconditioners

After decades of having to inhale stale, recycled air blasting out from airconditioners, Samsung has come up with a set of technologies that keeps both us and the environment healthy. Their split-type airconditioners — the R410a is an example —feature a Micro Plasma Ion Technology (MPI), which is an advanced air-purifying system that improves your indoor air quality by constantly eliminating the airborne biological contaminants (viruses, bacteria, and, fungi and allergens) that pose a threat to your health, sludge up your nasal passages, and cause sickness and infections. Adding more ammo to Samsung aircon’s health-care system, an Auto Roof Shutter keeps dirt from getting inside and collecting in the unit.

These cool cats also work hard in lulling you to sleep. Ditch the Nyquil and just rely on Samsung’s Good Sleep Mode technology, an automatic temperature-regulating system that adjusts to your body temperature while you sleep. This is particularly helpful when you’re extra-sensitive to cold temps or suffer from insomnia. You get good quality sleep and a rejuvenated morning. Adding more pep to the morning buzz is the knowledge that this temperature-regulating feature has saved you nearly 36 percent off your electricity costs. Samsung aircons are smart enough to know when it’s getting too cold, so you won’t have to keep on turning the unit on and off, or have to endure cold, frigid air. It’s a Smart Saver feature that protects both you and the environment.

Refrigerators

There’s hardly anything to get giddy about when it comes to ice boxes and food storages. But Samsung’s array of No Frost refrigerators might just change your mind, especially if you’re one who has had to deal with mounting grocery bills and an even larger mount of contained left-overs that just end up spoiled and mold-riddled in the trash bin.

Samsung’s No Frost technology is one of those little things that make a huge difference. For one, it relegates defrosting to the annals of the antiquated. An electronic timer goes off once in awhile to automatically defrost the refrigerator. It works along with a built-in fan in the freezer that circulates cold air and prevents frost from building up in the compartment – those days of ice cream tubs congealing to the freezer are over. No Frost also provides a more even temperature throughout the entire refrigerator, ensuring that food stays fresh longer.

Samsung’s No Frost refrigerator models, one of them the RT54EBPN, also features the_Cool Curtain system. Think of a cold curtain dropping from on top of the refrigerator to evenly blanket the entire cabinet with cold air, as opposed to conventional models where cold air enters the refrigerator from the rear. To further seal in the chill factor, Cool Boosters on the sides of the refrigerator ensures that food stays optimally-chilled, completing a three-dimensional cooling action all throughout.

These Samsung innovations are particularly relevant for the holiday season where gift staples such as fruit baskets, packaged ham and cheese dips need to be properly stored. It also helps that Samsung has instilled a Silver Nano coating in the inner surfaces of their refrigerators. Even if we try to ignore it, we know that food kept in the ref doesn’t mean it stays fresh and edible. This complex nano-technology has an overall antic-bacterial and anti-fungal effect that controls the airborne bacteria that circulates within the refrigerator, thus keeping food clean and healthy.

Most refrigerators run on only one compressor, enabling the possible mix of odors. Samsung’s twin-cooling system, available in their side-by-side, two-door refs, works on two compressors, one for the freezer and one for the main compartment. With this technology, you won’t have to worry about your drinking water tasting like sashimi.
