MANILA, Philippines - Who is the American food and wine connoisseur on the Emmy winning Queer Eye for the Straight Guy who is now the host of the Food Network’s Chopped and Food Detectives.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 20, 1965. His Southern-born mother instilled in him a love of food and cooking. After receiving a degree is psychology from Purdue University in 1967, he subsequently enrolled in its Krannert Graduate School of Management, but left to accept a job as copy editor of the Lafayette Indiana Journal and Courier.
After returning to grad school and acquiring an MA in journalism from NYU, he moved to Chicago where he worked as a reporter for Lorner Newspapers, a chain of weekly community newspapers.
It was there that he got his start in restaurant criticism as part of a review team called the Famished Four. He then went on to write for other publications, and joined Esquire magazine in 1997, where he wrote about food and co-authored the Things a Man Should Know series.
He gained popularity in 2003 when he became a cast member of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy series, where he was the show’s food and wine specialist. He continued to make television appearances as a judge on Iron Chef American and Top Chef.
In 2008, he joined Food Network as host of two shows. These include Chopped, a culinary competition in which four chefs per episode attempt to cook three courses to win a $10,000 prize; and Food Detectives, which uses scientific experiments to test myths about food. He is a frequent guest on television cooking shows and author of magazine articles and books including The Food You Want to Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes; Esquire’s Things a Man Should Know About Style, and was co-author of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the Fab Five’s Guide to Looking Better, Dressing Better, Behaving Better, and Living Better.
