Think pink this month
All over the world, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Let’s help in our own little way and help raise funds for breast cancer causes by buying those pink ribbons, pink T-shirts, pink bracelets, and attend fundraising events for breast cancer. This month, I know of two events for breast cancer awareness.
On Oct. 18 to 19, tickle your taste buds once again as the much-awaited Pink Kitchen returns to the Rockwell Tent from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Now in its second year, the Pink Kitchen is a one-of-a-kind food festival that brings together 50 talented and award-winning chefs in one kitchen. Some of the participants in this sumptuous event are Café Juanita, Gilbert Pangilinan of Kai Restaurant, Quito Jose of Brothers Burger who will be preparing a Thai menu, Betina Legarda and Judah Liu and Karen Young, who will be doing desserts.
Also returning to this year’s kitchen are Rob and Sunshine Pengson. Myrna Segismundo of the exclusive 9501 Restaurant at ELJ Building, which is open only to ABS CBN executives, Wyn Wyn Ong, Mona Valdez, Jill Sandique, Buddy Trinidad, Dimpy Camara and Tin Tin Rivera.
The Pink Kitchen is organized by the I Can Serve Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit foundation and advocacy group empowering women with breast cancer. There is an entrance fee of P200 for adults and P100 for children below 11 years old. Proceeds of the affair will go directly to I Can Serve Foundation flagship project Ating Dibdibin, the Philippines’ first community-based breast cancer screening program made under the auspices of the American Cancer Society.

There is an ongoing photo exhibit (until Oct. 12) of 21 cancer survivors at the Rockwell Power Plant, second floor of the Archeology Wing, by Everyday Warriors. They are breast cancer survivors who put together a coffee-table book of their photos and inspirational stories on how breast cancer changed their perspective, their priorities, their focus and their life in general.
Some of these brave warriors are Mimi Martin, Suzette Andrews, Melissa de Leon Joseph and Bibeth Orteza. Anne Puno gave the opening remarks on opening night. There were a lot of teary-eyed people in the audience when she recounted the ups and downs of her battle with the Big C, and how she drew her strength from prayer and the unwavering support of her husband, Rene, their three children and her support group, the Everyday Warriors.
The Joy of Living Foundation of Dr. Nelson Cabaluna is the beneficiary of this fundraising. The foundation helps finance breast cancer victims who can’t afford to have chemotherapy and other treatments.
