Although I do remember the New Years that we spent with Yuri. He used to be deathly scared of the loud noise that firecrackers make. I remember trying to comfort him the best I could but nothing seemed to work.
Yuri would run around the house and try to hide in any nook and cranny that he could find, just to get away from the loud noise.
It used to break my heart that there was really nothing I could do to comfort him. But I did try my best. We missed Yuri this holiday season, but we know that he has gone to the great beyond and is free from all the noise that he truly hates.
If your dog is in the house and is part of the celebration, make sure that you share him with friends and relatives. Allow the kids to pat him on the head, but make sure that they are careful when they do.
It is also a great idea to prepare your pets regular meal and feed him before company arrives.
Ham and lechon are great for lovers of meat. They smell good and taste even better, I am told. Relatives, especially the kids, might be tempted to give your dog some when he looks at them with his begging eyes. A little bit might be okay, but remember that his own food still provides him with the best vitamins.
Dont forget that chocolate can make your dog very sick. Ribbons, yarn and string can cause severe stomach problems and may require surgery if eaten by your pet.
And for those of you who plan to light a few firecrackers tonight (please dont but if you really must), loud noises can scare a pet that is usually calm and secure.
Some pets get very nervous when they hear fireworks. Some may pace back and forth or panic and try to run away. Some dogs will dig holes or even throw up. It is up to you to help your dog feel safe and secure during times of loud noises.
Even a dog that has her own doghouse and bed may get frightened when there are loud noises. Your dog may need you to help her calm down. Find a quiet place for your dog to feel safe and secure whenever there are loud, scary noises. You might even play some soft music. It may relax your dog and also drown out some of the noise.
