Seating Arrangement

If one is a lonely number and three is a crowd, two is just the perfect number to fill a home with love. An armchair seats one, a regular sofa seats three, a loveseat – a sofa small enough for two people, but too big for one – is just perfect for HHAH (holding hands at home) on Valentine’s Day.

Think of the possibilities you can do in a loveseat – okay, aside from watching TV. You can cuddle, hug, read a book aloud to someone beside you, whisper sweet nothings, feed each other chocolate, read love letters (or a breakup letter, but hopefully not today).

A space just for two. Like a pod for two peas.

Some designers many years back decided to gamble on another kind of seating, inspired by the loveseat’s success as a permanent fixture in living rooms and bedrooms around the word. They called it the "chair-and-a-half" or seat-and-a-half – a chair for either two very thin persons or a really big one. Sure, you can squeeze in your ass while your beloved is already seated, but really, there’s no sense of fun or romance in the term "chair and a half." It simply means an oversized chair, right?

With all these romantic thoughts in mind, we decided to explore what kind of loveseats are available on the local market. Home stores with great loveseats include Pineapple, which also has the most luscious candles and framed photo prints around; Dimensione, whose wide array of furniture and accessories is simply astounding and at price points swinging from hey-I-can-afford-this to are-you-out-of-your-mind; Our Home, the store that has brought stylish furniture and accessories at really affordable prices; and Kish, which made its name with unique home items that are sophisticated or naughty and oftentimes both. From our files we dug up loveseats manufactured by the Pampanga-based export company More Than a Chair.

What’s wonderful is the diverse styles and material used in such sofas. For instance, Ito Kish decided to design and produce a loveseat called Tessa Loveseat, inspired by style icon Tessa Prieto Valdes. It’s French Provincial style set in whitewash and antique finish.

Ito says, "I was inspired by Tessa’s personality. She’s so alive and she has this I-don’t-care-what-the-world thinks attitude with her dressing up and stuff."

A friend of his since Ito began importing furniture from Indonesia and selling them with a business partner in his house in Parañaque in the late 1990s, Tessa first came to his house as a curious shopper and ended up becoming a client.

Dimensione, meanwhile, displays loveseats in materials as varied as water hyacinth, fiberglass and polyethylene which is the most popular kind of plastic in the world.

The Pankassa loveseat/bench is made from Italy and designed by Denis Santachiara for Magis. The seat is convertible into a chest and suitable for outdoor use.

Also from Dimensione is the Tadpole Chair. Okay, so technically it’s not a love seat but we decided to include it since it comes in pairs and is so unique you’d love to have it in the house. The chairs are made in Thailand and of fiberglass.

From Pineapple and More Than A Chair (MTC) come loveseats in wood. Pineapple’s Gothic loveseat is made of tangile wood and comes with a red seat cushion. MTC’s Debra loveseat is a study in transitional style with its cane back, leather upholstered seat and cubic lines.

Our Home offers a lot of choices in upholstered loveseats and in different colors, too. With the store’s large retail space in SM Megamall, Our Home can display a lot of furniture pieces and accessories to match.

So go ahead and pick out your loveseat. Aside from giving your space a warm, intimate look, you can sit with your beloved and just be glad you’re sharing a chair – and a life.
