MANILA, Philippines — Throughout October, Araneta City will host several events in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Data from the Department of Health says 38,000 Filipinas died from breast cancer between 2018 and 2021.

"This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we're not only raising awareness about breast cancer, but also fostering a sense of solidarity and hope for those affected by this disease," said Araneta City's vice president for marketing Marjorie Go.

Festivities began last October 1 with a launch in collaboration with the Kasuso Foundation, a volunteer organization dedicated to helping indigent breast cancer patients through early detection and awareness, that included free blood pressure and breast check-ups an art exhibit by breast cancer patients and survivors.

Also last October 1, the Araneta Coliseum was lit in pink — the color symbolizing breast cancer awareness — and until October 6 the pedestrian lanes along Gen. Malvar and Gen. Aguinaldo streets became pink pathways.

The following week, Gateway Mall 2 hosted talks by breast cancer survivors Lorna Fabian and Loida Almirol as well as a breast health discussion by Dr. Karen Gemma See.

Shoppers in Araneta City who make a single-receipt purchase of P2,000 on October 18 can redeem a special Pink Awareness Kit where the first hundred customers will receive a pink umbrella, tote bag, and ribbon enamel pin.

On October 21, Farmers Plaza will stage the Pink Power Concert featuring local artists, talents from the Kasuso Foundation, and a free skin consultation by Vanity First.

Culminating the festivities is a "Kasuso Negosyo" event at Ali Mall on October 28 where breast cancer survivors can share their entrepreneurial success stories and products.

"By lighting up our spaces in pink and organizing these impactful events, we hope to drive people into action and remind every woman of the importance of early detection. Together, we can make a difference," Go affirmed.
