Why we choose to homeschool our kids: Real moms speak out

Tina Santiago-Rodriguez - Philstar.com

Homeschooling isn’t a widely accepted educational option yet here in the Philippines, but more and more families are opting to explore it and, eventually, choose it as part of their lifestyle.

To some, this may be a “weird” choice – why in the world would parents choose to be primarily responsible for their children’s education as their main teachers? It seems like a “crazy” thing to do!

But the reality is homeschooling parents have their own good reasons for choosing the “road less travelled.” Below are some of them – read through everything with an open heart and mind, and who knows, if you’re a parent, you might even be inspired to explore homeschooling as an option for your child!

“My husband and I decided to pursue homeschooling for two of our kids (in Grade 5 and Kinder 2), specifically under Catholic Filipino Academy, to be more involved in our children's learning journey. I appreciate the challenges presented by being the educator of my kids, because I am able to learn not just about pure academics, but more about myself and the many different roles I assume every day.”

– Tanya Marquez, session back-up singer, and mother to Martin, 11, Marga, 6, and Maxine, 17

“My husband and I chose to homeschool our boys to answer ‘God's call.’ We believe that homeschooling is a ‘holy calling from God.’ We are being molded to be better individuals and a stronger couple while equipping our sons to be truly ‘men of God.’”

– Jing De Guzman, dentist, homemaker, homeschool parent coach, wife to Oliver, mom to Joaquin 14, and Nathan, 12

“I chose to homeschool because I wanted to see for myself if I am truly my child's best teacher. When we first started, I figured I would never know unless I tried. We are now on our fifth year and I can say that yes, I am my child's best teacher and that I am happy that we took on this lifestyle.”

– Jen Mayuga-Cruz, retailer and homeschooling mom to Mateo, 8, and Daniella, 2

“I choose to homeschool my kids because I want to strengthen their relationship with the Lord and create many magic moments with them. This way, they will see the true value of family.”

– Pam Cadiz, parent coach under Catholic Filipino Academy, homeschooling mom to Paul, 11, and Samantha, 9

These moms are just part of the growing population of Filipino homeschoolers, and – as you can read above – they have varying reasons for homeschooling their kids. If you want to discover more reasons for homeschooling, and get a glimpse into what homeschooling is really like, plus how to get started, Bo Sanchez’s homeschooling program under Catholic Filipino Academy is holding a “Homeschool Discovery Time” on Feb. 9, 2016, at 9 a.m. (for Preschool and Grade School) and 1 p.m. (for High School). It will be held at Obispado de Cubao, 41 Lantana Street, Cubao, Quezon City. For inquiries and details on how to reserve slots, kindly contact (632) 7211088.
