MANILA, Philippines - A family from San Diego, California welcomed 2016 with twins born in different years.
In a rare incident, the twins – baby girl, Jaelyn, and baby boy, Luis – were born at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31 and at 12:02 a.m. on Jan. 1, respectively, NBC reported.
A case of fraternal twins is common, but the timing of their birth is rare, which is why their case has gotten worldwide attention.
According to the report, Maribel Valencia, who gave birth to the twins at the Kaiser Permanente Zion Medical Center in San Diego, California, had her cesarean section scheduled for January 6. But the babies came out earlier than expected.
"[Maribel] really wanted to have the babies on the same birthday because you know later on in the years, they're going to have a little confrontation and be like, 'my birthday came first,' so it means two birthday parties, back to back," told Maribel's husband to NBC.
Because of the time interval, Jaelyn was also recognized as the last baby born in 2015 in San Diego while Luis is the first.
