3 family-friendly events that are worth attending this weekend

Tina Santiago-Rodriguez - The Philippine Star

If you're looking for somewhere to go with your family this weekend, here's a quick round-up of events that are definitely worth checking out:

1. Learn how to manage your finances at the Ready To Be Rich: Family Finances Workshop

When my husband and I were newly married, we didn't know how to manage and budget our finances properly. Since we were both fulltime missionaries with small salaries at the time, we had a "poor man's outlook" when it came to money and how to manage it. We thought that it was OK to live from paycheck to paycheck -- "after all, God will provide," we said

All that changed though, when we were able to attend a free financial literacy seminar (email me at tina@trulyrichmom.com if you want to attend one too!). It literally changed the way we think about money!

If you have the extra finances though, and want to invest in a practical, hands-on financial management workshop, I encourage you to check out the Ready To Be Rich: Family Finances Workshop this weekend, to be given by Fitz Villafuerte. Fitz is an engineer and registered financial planner, and is the man behind the award-winning blog, "Ready To Be Rich."

The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014, from 10:00AM to 4:00PM, at 10F Fort Legend Tower, 3rd Avenue and 31st Street, Bonifacio Global City Taguig. Participants are advised to bring a calculator.

2. Experience unique Filipino cuisine and celebrate Taal Vista's 75th Anniversary

As an advocate of "family field trips," I love it when certain places we visit with our kids feature the richness of our local culture, heritage and traditions. One such place is Taal Vista Hotel.

During our visit there earlier this year, we were able to watch Filipino cultural dancers perform while we were having lunch. We were also treated to scrumptious Filipino fare, and other delicacies. We also learned a bit of history, not just about the hotel, but also a few historical facts about Taal Volcano.

The Filipino cultural performances are usually held every weekend at Taal Vista Hotel's Café Veranda. On selected weekends starting July this year, visitors have also been experiencing celebrity guest chefs’ unique interpretations of Filipino Cuisine at the Culinary Gems: A Festival of Filipino Flavors Buffet. This is all part of Taal Vista Hotel’s 75th Anniversary Celebration.

This particular weekend, visitors to the Café will get an extra treat because Chef Sau del Rosario will be sharing the heirloom recipes from his Kapampangan roots. (He will also be doing so on September 27-28).

So if you're planning for a quick getaway to Tagaytay this weekend, do drop by Café Veranda for a taste of authentic Kapampangan food!

3. Find the best books and other educational materials at the Manila International Book Fair

The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) is undoubtedly the country's biggest book fair, and it actually celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. It is on this week until September 21, at the SMX Convention Center at the SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City.

Personally, I'd recommend you visit the following booths if you're headed to the MIBF:

1. Adarna — One of our family's favorite children's book publishers, Adarna usually has lots of books on sale during the MIBF. I was able to snag quite a few last year, and I hope to do the same this year, too. Adarna is at booths G188-192.

2. Shepherd's Voice Publications (SVP) — Founded by Catholic lay preacher Bo Sanchez, SVP is the publishing company you'd want to check out for quality, inspirational reads.

I'm blessed and privileged to work part-time as an editor for SVP, but even before I started working for them, I was already a huge fan of their books and magazines!

If you want to get a mega-dose of inspiration, check out SVP's booth at booths 261-262. This Sunday, there will be a Meet and Greet of the different authors who will be launching their books at the MIBF, including Bro. Bo himself.
