Solane: Cooking with gas made safer and easier

MANILA, Philippines - If you are a homemaker, a housewife or a stay-at-home mom, chances are you’d find yourself working before an open flame on a gas-fuelled stove more than once within the span of an ordinary day. Stovetop cooking is said to be one of the world’s most universal energy-consuming activities. And in many regions, including our country, LPG is considered one of the most convenient and efficient fuels for cooking.

Cooking with gas has many advantages. It provides immediate heat upon ignition. There is no need for a warming-up period, as would be the case with an electric stove.

Moreover, it gives you the ability to see the strength of the heat from the flame and to regulate it immediately and accurately. No wonder, it is popular among home cooks and chefs alike.

There are, however, a few important things you need to know about that innocent-looking LPG cylinder in your kitchen. Did you know that LPG is both colorless and odorless? What you might sometimes smell is actually a “stench” agent that is added before delivery to help detection of any leaks. But there are some unscrupulous suppliers who may not bother to take that extra expense. And due to the LPG’s low limit for flammability, even a small leak left undetected could have serious results.

Solane, the LPG brand that adheres to a high-level of safety standards, recently launched a new security feature in its tank with its new safety cap and seal, which “exemplify Solane’s commitment to innovation and safety,” said Ramon del Rosario, Solane’s chief operations officer. “It is a service that we are committed to provide to our customers to ensure their safety and protection while using LPG at home or at work.”

“Solane’s innovative tamper-proof seal is a symbol of its quality and authenticity,” Solane’s metal manager Joel Alpuerto explained. It comes with a serial number and unique embossed markings. You can rip off the tab from the safety cap and log on to Facebook. Go to Solane’s page (www.facebook.com/Solane.PH) and click on Apps to use the Solane Authenticity Checker.  Enter the serial number to verify if the tank came from a licensed Solane dealer. “Others don’t have this safety feature,” Alpuerto said. “This aims to protect Solane customers from illegal LPG re-fillers.”

A first-of-its kind in the LPG industry, “the new Solane safety cap and seal are made of high-grade plastic that completely plugs the gas to prevent leaks before installing the tank with a hose. It has an automatic shut-off feature when the regulator is removed,” Alpuerto explained. “You may reuse the Solane safety cap by plugging and locking it in the LPG valve, especially when you are storing your LPG tank. Storing a Solane LPG tank with a safety cap also keeps it protected from becoming a possible source of ignition.”

Some words of caution: LPG vapor is heavier than air and any leakage will sink to the ground, so it is advisable never to store LPG tanks in basements.

Choose a secure, well-ventilated space where you can store your LPG tank, preferably outdoors and away from direct sunlight, heat, and other sources of ignition.  Always turn off the cylinder valve and regulator when not in use.

Solane has also intensified its safety campaign by signing a memorandum of agreement with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). Under the partnership, Solane will hold a series of training programs with BFP personnel, local government units including selected communities and barangays nationwide. “The extensive talks will further enhance the expertise of these groups in managing LPG-related explosion, fire, and even emergency response to these incidents,” del Rosario noted. “LPG is number four among the top sources of fire in the country.”

“It is our aim to minimize or totally eliminate incidents that harm people or put our customers, neighbors or facilities at risk,” del Rosario remarked. “Safe is now safer with Solane’s new safety cap and seal.”
