Let your kids play outdoors

A child should not always be buried in homework, confined in the four corners of the home or treat gadgets as their “playmates.” They need to soak up some sun, play with other kids, and feel free to move and explore. Through experiential play, children learn to be more creative, to concentrate, be patient, and be confident about themselves.

But would you really allow your kids to go out and get dirty?

“Definitely!” exclaims actress Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo. “My mom gave me the freedom to go biking, play tag, and patintero when I was a kid. And there’s no reason why I shouldn’t allow my kids Jacobo and Ayisha to have the same experience.”

Unlike the kids today, Dawn says they weren’t as engrossed with TV then.

“We didn’t even have computers then. So playtime meant going out with my neighbors right after our afternoon naps,” she relates.

Dawn, together with her playmates, would go to the empty lot right outside their home in Makati City where they piled up some gravel.

“We had so much fun rolling down on it on our bikes. Sometimes sumisemplang ako,  so I would go home with bruises on my arms and knees. I smelled awful — amoy araw! My mom would scold me because I had libag on my neck and my sweat looked like mud with all the dirt,”  shares Dawn.

Now that she’s a mom herself, Dawn admits it’s not that easy to let the kids play outdoors unattended.

“Simply because the world isn’t as safe as before. But as much as I want to keep Jacobo indoors, I don’t want to compromise the opportunity for him to learn and experience the things I experienced when I was his age, so I encourage him to play outdoors and be physically active. So sige lang kahit na paguwi nila puro mantsa ang damit,” notes Dawn.

But then again, every stain in our kids’s clothes — after spending an hour or two playing outdoors — leads to something good. It helps develop your child’s creativity, improves social skills, physical development, and confidence.

Well, kids will always be kids and part of it is getting literally dirty.
