Say 'Chest!'

Life is like a mirror.  Dr. Clifford Khan

After the much-applauded, most-attended session by members of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) at Edsa Shangri-La in March 2011, the PCCP, as early as June, 2011, already booked us for an LYoga session for their annual convention on March 15, 2012, also at Edsa Shangri-La.

Clearly, the star of the show was Dr. Parkash Mansuhani whom I fondly call Mr. Showman. He is a natural because, at the flick of a finger, he can add varying twists to the laughter exercises. He can be an effective LYoga teacher! Based at Davao Medical Center, he requested that I conduct an LYoga session over there.

After a brief introduction and enumeration of the many health benefits of LYoga, we did with some meant-to-loosen-up warm-up exercises. I then introduced new LYoga exercises, such as Walk in the Sand Laughter, and because the participants were doctors, I added the Prescription Laughter  both drew a long roaring laughter from the participants. The Prescription Laughter, sent Dr. Parkash almost rolling with laughter on the floor (please view the youtube lycphohohaha and roll laughingly with us)  which the doctors said might make their patients think something is weird with their doctors. When we did the anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, good for the diaphragm Lion Laughter exercise, I requested Dr. Parkash to demonstrate it before the other doctors, and he did it really well, complete with the sound of a lion.   Ha ha ha!

Dr. Fe Cabrera of Iligan City, right after the LYoga session, approached and asked me to visit Iligan. She said, “You are really needed there because the typhoon Sendong victims are still reeling from their horrible experiences.” I told her that though I have sent help for the victims, I made a vow to go there before the year ends  with the hope that LYoga may help ease the victims’ suffering somehow. To make them see gleams of hope as tomorrows always bring new and fresh opportunities for everyone. To make them smile and laugh again!

Laughter Yoga teaches people to use laughter as a mechanism to cope with stress. It can be an extremely useful way to deflect stress, resulting in the release of stress hormones and chemicals.

It was truly a delight and great joy to bond, laugh, dance, swing hips, bend waists, and roll with hearty laughter with these doctors. They can be like children as they release all the tensions and stresses from their bodies while doing the laughter and breathing exercises. Ho ho ha ha ha! Keep laughing. It will help your patients get well  faster, better, and easier!

Life can be likened to a mirror!   Give a smile and you get a smile, laugh and you get laughter.

Jill de Villa of Asian Development Bank, who attended the LYoga session, wrote: “Elvie’s infectious laughter does not come across in print  what a gift it is, for her and everybody who is lucky enough to hear it.”

More awe-inspiring comments from our lovable, happy chest doctors:
