Saving lives through organ donation & transplantation
MANILA, Philippines - Kidney diseases, especially end stage renal disease, are now the seventh leading cause of death among Filipinos. Each year, about 120 Filipinos per million population develop kidney diseases. Unfortunately, only 73 percent receive proper treatment through dialysis or other therapies because they could afford it.
Dialysis costs from P25,000 to P46,000 per month, a huge burden both for the patients and their families. Majority of these patients cannot go on the treatment for a year, because it is just too costly. In the end, they only receive partial therapy which may be enough for them to live, but end up being weak and unable to go to work.
To help alleviate this problem, foreign and local studies have shown that kidney transplantation is the best option for patients with kidney failure. To help promote kidney transplantation and organ donation, a lay forum called “Kidneys for Life! Promoting Organ Donation & Tansplantation,” will be held on Thursday, March 8, from 7 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Conference Facility Unit of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.
Organized by the Asian Hospital and Medical Center’s Section of Nephrology, in cooperation with Critical Care and Emergency Services-Hemodialysis Unit, the lay forum will show that the quality of life a kidney transplant patient has is far more superior to those patients undergoing dialysis.
Free blood checkups and consultations will be administered during the forum. Urine Dipstick Tests will also be given to the first 100 on-site registrants.
