Healthy teeth, healthy body
MANILA, Philippines - Good oral hygiene makes teeth cleaner and stronger, breath fresher, and our smiles brighter things that can go a long way in love-filled February, which also happens to be National Dental Month.
While it seems apt that February has been designated as National Dental Health Month, this month-long awareness campaign is as good a time as any to drive home the point that oral health does not stop at sporting pearly whites. Dental experts have said that what happens in our mouths may affect our whole body’s well-being, and studies suggest that bacteria buildup in teeth and gums could travel through the bloodstream, causing infection in other parts of the body such as the inner lining of the heart or the arteries. Osteoporosis is another condition associated with poor oral health, as it leads to periodontal and tooth loss.
“We have to emphasize how important good oral hygiene is to one’s overall health, especially since the link between oral infections and diseases including cardiovascular complications is becoming more documented and recognized within the health care community,” says Dr. Athena Hinolan, a dentist from Healthway, Greenbelt 5.
Cavities, tooth decay, swollen and bleeding gums, and halitosis or bad breath should be enough red flags to alert everyone to the importance of oral care. That’s why, in line with the National Dental Month, Healthway Dental Services, part of one of the largest networks of dental clinics in Asia under Healthway Medical, is emphasizing the need to regularly carry out some essentials for maintaining good dental hygiene.
These include brushing and flossing properly at least twice a day and getting a new toothbrush every three to four months. Eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and taking in lots of water are also very good ways to improve oral health. Oral health awareness will also benefit those who quit smoking, limit snacks between meals, and avoid sugary beverages, such as soft drinks.
A regular visit to the dentist caps good oral health. Only a dentist has the skills, training, and expertise to provide a comprehensive diagnosis about your oral health condition and to advise you on appropriate treatment and care. In addition to having some of the top dentists in the country in its clinics, Healthway Dental provides a full line of services, from oral prophylaxis, dental fillings, and crowns to more advanced procedures like TMJ therapy, orthodontics, Invisalign, and dental implants.
“At Healthway Dental, we work with you to help you attain and maintain oral health,” says Carmie de Leon, Healthway vice president for sales and marketing. “Our clinics are located in key centers of the metro for greater convenience, and our dentists can identify your individual needs and help you build your own oral care plan.”
This month, Healthway drums up the message of oral health through a promo called “Love Your Teeth,” in which clients can get a free dental checkup from Healthway’s in-house dentist, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, from Sunday to Friday only. The promo runs from Feb. 6 to 29.
Healthway clinics are also offering a Youngster Deal dental promo, where those 17 years old and younger can enjoy an exclusive package that includes dental consultation, oral prophylaxis, and fluoride application for only P500.
