Don't let your guard down against dengue

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) recently reported that a total of 29,898 dengue cases were monitored in various hospitals across the nation, from January to June of this year.

Of this number, approximately 185 cases ended up as fatalities.    The DOH has warned the public against being complacent, especially in light of the rainy season. Due to this inclement weather, potential breeding sites for the dengue-carrying mosquito are increased.

In the event that parents suspect that their child’s fever is caused by dengue, reach for paracetamol (Calpol).   Mothers should follow the recommendation of the World Health Organization that Paracetamol is the only treatment for fever that may be caused by dengue because aspirin and ibuprofen may cause or aggravate bleeding in the stomach and other fatal complications.

To ensure safety and efficacy, weight-based dosage of paracetamol must be followed. Remember: while children may be the same age, they may differ greatly in weight so the correct amount of medication will vary. Mothers are advised to consult a doctor if symptoms persist.
