Victory Liner takes the road to education
MANILA, Philippines - Victory Liner, the company that has been passionate about moving people safer and better, also gives a lot of importance to the lives and dreams of its employees and their families.
Continuing the values instilled in them by their grandparents, the second-generation members of the Hernandez family founded the Doña Marta T. Hernandez (DMTH) Foundation. Now in its 14th year, the foundation serves as the main driver of Victory Liner’s humanitarian involvements. One of DMTH’s main beneficiaries is the employees themselves. Since it started, more than 1,000 children of Victory Liner employees have received college scholarships.
Becoming a DMTH Foundation scholar is a privilege, and unlike other scholarship programs that require recipients to enroll in specific courses and work for them after graduation, DMTH scholars have free rein. But some, recognizing the family orientation of the company, have chosen to work for Victory Liner.
“My father had worked for Victory Liner for 32 years. I wanted to see how the company is like. I know he wouldn’t last at Victory Liner if the company’s management is not good,” says Maria Teresa Pelingon whose father started out in the company as a conductor before becoming a dispatcher and finally retiring as a station master.
The second of three siblings, Maria Teresa’s father registered her to become a DMTH scholar when she entered college at the Don Honorio Ventura College of Art in Pampanga. Her younger brother is also a scholar. The scholarship, she said, helped her family tremendously with their finances. With a BS Education diploma tucked under her belt, Pelingon sought out her luck at Victory Liner. She started out as a ticket seller. Today, she’s working her way up as part of Victory Liner’s legal department.
Another DMTH scholar who also found her way home to Victory Liner is Mylene Tayag.
A daughter of a Victory Liner employee who has been with the company 34 years now, Tayag is grateful to DMTH for motivating her to study well. She graduated with a BS Commerce degree from the University of Assumption in Pampanga. Later, she landed a job at Victory Liner as a ticket seller; now, she’s with the audit department.
