A close look at colon cancer

-

MANILA, Philippines - Since a former Philippine president passed on because of colon cancer, public interest in the disease has grown significantly. To this day, however, colon cancer remains a global health issue; according to the World Health Organization, it is the fourth most common cancer worldwide that claimed the lives of more than 600,000 in 2008.

Colon, also referred to as the large intestine, plays a vital role. Aside from eliminating wastes and maintaining water balance in the body, it also serves as a site for growth of beneficial bacteria that help fight toxins which contribute to overall health and nourish cells lining the colon. When normal colon functions are disrupted, growth and reproduction of abnormal cells or polyps begin to form which could lead to colon cancer.

“Colon cancer arises when polyps or tiny abnormal growths begin to appear inside the lining of a person’s colon or rectum,” says Dr. Jovonie B. Cacal, gastroenterologist of Healthway SM The Block.

Colonoscopy is an internal examination of the colon and rectum using a colonoscope. If suspicious growths are found, tissue samples may be taken for analysis. Upon detection, polyps may be removed using a device called electrocautery snares. The whole process usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

Carmie de Leon, Healthway vice president for sales and marketing, reiterates Healthway’s commitment to early detection and preventive health care. She says, “As guardians of health, we constantly look for ways to communicate with everyone, most especially our clients, and teach them ways of further taking care of their health.”

“Regular check-ups are also important to help detect a sickness or disease,” adds de Leon.
