The healthy way to detoxify

MANILA, Philippines - Toxins usually build up in the body, whether from the stressful everyday routine at work, or the food binge which Filipinos usually face during the holidays.

So, before your body’s defense against illnesses goes down due to the toxins, you should make it a point to detoxify.

Zen Institute’s medical director Dr. Mary Jane Torres says detoxification is good for the body because it removes waste products from the blood in the liver, kidneys, intestines, lungs, and other organs.

She adds that when someone detoxifies, he/she refuels the body with healthy nutrients and stimulates the liver to drive toxins away from the body.

Detoxification also improves blood circulation and boosts metabolism.

Dr. Torres points out that there are many types of detox programs depending on a person’s lifestyle.

Among the detox programs available is colonics. This involves pumping water into the rectum. But for those who want to detoxify orally, a powdered drink is the best way to do it.

Zen Institute offers Green D-tox, a powdered drink made of vegetables. All you have to do is mix it with warm water before going to sleep and wait for eight hours.

Dr. MJ says this procedure is only advised for adults of good health from 21 to 75 years old.

Dr. MJ adds there may be different ways of detoxing, but as a general rule, it begins with healthy eating habits — from high-fiber food, such as brown rice, to green tea, herbs, and fruits rich in vitamin C.

Drinking lots of water is crucial, too, as well as breathing deeply to allow more oxygen to circulate in the body.

The Zen Institute has branches at Bonifacio Global City in Taguig, Scout Rallos Street in Quezon City, and at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza in Manila inside LeSpa.
