Going, glowing, growing
MANILA, Philippines - The ongoing Laki sa Gatas Nutrition Education Advocacy recently marked a milestone when it signed up its one millionth nutrition-empowered mom.
With one million moms and counting, the turnout shows the growing interest in this crusade among parents and Filipinos in general, and demonstrates the Laki sa Gatas Nutrition Education Advocacy’s high level of commitment to help combat malnutrition.
Since it was launched in 2006, the program has emphasized the important role that mothers play as guardians of food and nutrition for the family and principal caregivers of young children. A big part of the Laki sa Gatas advocacy is the various nutrition-centered activities, which it holds in every public school that it visits. Once parents sign up, they will be able to learn how to make the right food choices for their families based on the “Go, Grow and Glow” categories and the importance of milk drinking. This activity gives them the knowledge on how to provide basic nutrients in their children’s diet without stretching their budget.
The children’s session, on the other hand, includes numerous fun and educational activities for grades 2 and 3 pupils. These include storytelling sessions, exciting games, and an activity using “ambition glasses” in which their drawings of their ambition in life are inserted around drinking glasses to serve as a reminder that they are never too far from their dreams if they stay strong and healthy.
“In the schools that we have visited, we are pleased to see mothers participating in activities of the nutrition program. We see their interest in the many nutritional values they learn from Laki sa Gatas sessions. That is how we see the effectiveness of our program,” says Jasmin Estacio, consumer marketing manager for Bear Brand.
By acknowledging the role of women in nutrition, the Laki sa Gatas advocacy is able to bring home to mothers the vital link between food security and strengthening of family nutrition and health, which ultimately impacts on their children’s future.
