Talking about multilingual education

MANILA, Philippines - The Linguistic Society of the Philippines, (LSP), in collaboration with the English Department of the Ateneo de Manila University, will hold a conference on mother tongue-based multilingual education (MLE) on August 19 and 20 at the Leong Hall, Quezon City campus of Ateneo. The conference aims to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on the use of the mother tongue in education.

Plenary speakers are Dr. David C. S. Li of the Hong Kong Institute of Education and Dr. T. Ruanni Tupas of the National University of Singapore. Dr. Li will discuss multilingualism from an Asian perspective while Dr. Tupas will talk about mother tongues and social development.

The conference will bring together other speakers who will focus on the various aspects of multilingual education. Among them are Dr. Gregory Dekker (MLE and assessment) and Dr. Diane Dekker (MLE and materials development), both of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Dr. Ma. Antoinette Montealegre of Philippine Normal University will focus on MLE and differentiated instruction while Dr. Ricardo Nolasco of the University of Philippines-Diliman will explain the challenges of multilingual education.
