Asian Hospital offers US' laparoscopic surgery
MANILA, Philippines - The most raved about laparoscopic or minimally invasive procedure in the United States today, Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), is now being offered at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.
The SILS procedure, introduced in US hospitals just last year in cholecystectomies or gallbladder surgeries, is now the trend in laparoscopic surgery.
Deemed to be a critical advancement in minimally invasive surgery, SILS involves a single 20-mm incision through the belly button compared to the four 1/2-inch or smaller incisions typically associated with general laparoscopic procedures. This procedure involves the use of a flexible scope and instruments that can easily move around inside the body and produce images from almost every angle. Additionally, the instrument provides surgeons with a larger field of view and helps them avoid situations where the tips of different instruments collide in smaller spaces during the operation.
Previously, gastrointestinal patients had only two surgical options: conventional open surgery or laparoscopic with multiple incisions.
“SILS represents a feasible advanced laparoscopic procedure that gives patients a better surgical experience with the less discomfort, risk for infection, and quick recovery it offers. It also offers patients, particularly women, the added benefit of a single scar, which answers their need for a surgical procedure that leaves minimal scars,” explains Dr. Rolando Mendiola, general and vascular, and advanced laparoscopic surgeon at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center.
