Stories of hope for cancer patients

MANILA, Philippines – Being diagnosed with cancer seems like receiving a death sentence. Most cancer patients are afraid, confused, and at times ill-informed about their condition. They need a good doctor who understands their needs and becomes their partner in combating the disease.

Dr. Ang Peng Tiam is exactly that kind of doctor. An oncologist at Singapore General Hospital, Dr. Ang has treated over 7,000 patients in his entire career since 1989. He has written a book released by Anvil Publishing about notable cases of some of his patients entitled Surviving Cancer: Stories of Hope. The book is a heart-wrenching and eye-opening collection of the stories of Dr. Ang’s patients, and the treatments he has administered to them. It also includes photos of his patients and a checklist of common cancer symptoms.

In the foreword, Robert Suntay, managing director of the Carewell Community, states: “Dr. Ang’s style of writing is engaging and easy to understand. He discussed the cases thoroughly and compassionately, and made sure that he covered both the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of the treatment.”

The book gives a glimpse of Dr. Ang’s compassionate character. His narrative shows that he views his patients as more than just cases; he understands that his patients are real people who struggle to beat this fatal disease. He tells their stories in a simple and engaging manner, and freely discusses the treatments they were given.

Throughout the book Dr. Ang shows the different issues cancer patients face in their battle. Apart from the disease, cancer patients have to deal with denial and facing their own mortality. The stories also serve as answers to his patients’ frequently asked questions. He repeatedly reminds the reader that early detection and regular checkup is essential in the treatment of many cancers. He also discusses his views on alternative forms of medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and warns patients about the “miracle cures” that are so prevalent on the market today.

Surviving Cancer includes the story of Dr. Ang’s Filipino patient Addison See who was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Dr. Ang treated him and together, they were able to prolong his life beyond the expected life span for patients with stage 4 cancer. Addison now lives an active life with his family and seeks other colon cancer patients to support them.

The book, now available at National Book Store, will serve as an inspiring guide for oncologists and patients alike, as well as enhance cancer awareness among the public.
