Rock, Barbie, rock

It took almost nine years and two bands (Hungry Young Poets and Barbies Cradle) before the charming rocker turned solo. Of course, we are talking about the very talented singer-songwriter Yvette Barbara "Barbie" Almalbis.
The magic spark in her solo career started in August 2005, when her Just A Smile Close-Up jingle took the airwaves by storm and kicked off a series of TV commercials. The song was No. 1 in the Mobile MYX Top Picks for five weeks.
Admittedly, I am not a music buff, but as a marketing person, I know that it is phenomenal for one album to have four No. 1 hits. I was told that this is a first in the history of the local recording industry. These four hits are High, the Eraserheads original Overdrive, Dahilan, and Sunsilks summer campaign carrier Summer Day. All four are part of the recently released solo album "Parade" under independent label 12 Stone Records of her manager Tommy Tanchangco.
A devoted born-again Christian, Barbie proudly claims that Dahilan is an inspirational song. "The lyrics differentiate between just knowing God and forging a relationship with Him. The second takes effort but is something worth it. It is my hope, as in my past songs, to glorify Him through music. I want Him to be real in the lives of listeners who will be touched by Dahilan."
Sweet and childlike, and a perennial optimist because of her unwavering faith in God, it is easy to "get lost inside (her) eyes, (to) feel closer to the sky when (she) saves the day with just a smile." The simple but catchy lyrics keep humming inside my brain. Just like the simple but true answers of Barbie to our questions.
Philippine Star: What part of your body are you most proud of?
Barbie Almalbis: My forearms because my grip is quite strong probably from playing the guitar.
Which part of your body do you wish to develop? How?
I want to develop my lungs and diaphragm by doing more cardiovascular exercises. I need strong lungs for singing.
How is your diet?
I have a healthful diet. I only eat sweets and junk food sometimes.
Describe your workout.
I do mostly cardiovascular exercises, some abdominal exercises, and bicep curls.
Are you currently engaged in any sports?
No.
Does your family share the same healthy lifestyle?
Yes.
Tell us how you handle stress.
I spend time with God, exercise, and make sure I have a complete day of rest from work every week.
How do you maintain great-looking skin?
I drink (a lot of) water, no coffee. I dont smoke and I remove my makeup when I get home. I also try not to experiment and apply too many products on my skin. I wash my face twice a day at most.
How do you maintain your strong singing voice? Do you have any special ritual before or after a show?
I usually dont drink cold water and I refrain from eating sweets but I eat ice cream sometimes.
Do you get enough sleep? Do you take naps?
I used to sleep (very) late, but I try to get at least eight hours of sleep. I only take naps when I am too tired.
How about vitamins and supplements?
I take vitamin C.
Any vices? Any resolutions to improve your health?
No vices. Resolutions to exercise more regularly and not eat a couple of hours before bedtime.
What can the public expect from Barbie in the future, image and careerwise?
My first solo album just came out, and Im excited for people to hear the new sound. Were having a major concert at Araneta on May 19, "Barbie Rocks The Dome," with Kitchie Nadal and Rocksteddy.
Any health tips for our young women readers?
Drink lots of water, eat healthfully but dont completely deprive yourself of the food you enjoy. Just learn to take everything in moderation. Dont skip meals, exercise, and keep an active and pure lifestyle.
