TikTok star Jujumao shares tips for aspiring content creators
MANILA, Philippines — Popular content creator Jujumao gave simple and sensible tips for those who would like to follow his path.
The TikTok star held a cooking tutorial and workshop last year where he showed four flavors of dips for Calamares. He was actively answering questions from the participants while he was showing the step-by-step process as well as giving cooking tips.
For Jujumao, it is important to know the social media landscape to be able to navigate it. He, for one, started doing dance challenges on Tiktok, which makes a bulk of content on the popular platform, before he ventured into making food or cooking videos.
Juri "Jujumao" Imao has 826,000 YouTube subscribers, 2.6 million TikTok followers, and 1.3 million Instagram followers.
The Finance graduate from Ateneo, however, has long been into cooking and the arts, the latter a natural progression since he descended from the family of National Artist Abdulmari Imao. His father is an equally gifted sculpture, Sajid Imao.
For those who would like to try content creation, Jujumao gave tips he personally learned from years of doing online content.
1. Just do it
As cliche as it might sound, Jujumao said that when one has an idea, it is as good as taking into action and making it happen.
He explained that one might initially hesitate on starting on their interests because they might lack in equipment, such as the right gear and camera. But this should not stop one from starting their plan.
“I had no idea what I was doing. I just wanted to start it. I think there are things that hold people back. I need this, that. You have to start it. Whatever thoughts you have, is the best concept that you have. I think that’s the best way to put it,” he said.
2. Be constantly online
It is a given that for anyone who is into content creation to be online.
Jujumao said that being online helps any content creator to be updated with trends. More importantly, it helps any content creator to be relevant.
“Relevancy is such an important part of being a content creator, and when you stop adapting to times, that’s when you start going down.
“As much as possible, I mean, this is second nature to me, babad na talaga ako sa social media. Madalas ako mag-scroll. So, if you’re an aspiring content creator, my advice for you din is to be online. Make yourself aware of the trend, like what videos online are moving. Those are trends that you can incorporate in your content to stay relevant,” Jujuamao advised.
3. Build a relationship with the community
It is easy to conclude that content creators might be in a competition. But in the case of Jujumao, he sees it as healthy competition. In fact, he has found a "barkada" in fellow creators Abi Marquez and the couple Kath and Gene.
Jujumao said that often the most overlooked part in content creation is tapping the help of the community.
“Never overlook the help of the community. Try as much as possible to open yourself with very like-minded people like you. It’s through my exposure with them that I really learned how to function in the space and kahit gaano ka kagaling na content creator, I believe that if you don't have like-minded people around you… Siguro, the journey is not the same if that makes sense. Parang na-fasttrack ‘yung career ko,” the content creator said.
Jujumao admitted that content creators have lifespans, but he is not worried. For him, it is more important to sustain his career by constantly being exposed to trends that could potentially branch out to other avenues for business or opportunities.
