Jeepney vs e-jeepney: Specs and features
MANILA, Philippines — Dubbed as the Philippines' "Hari ng Kalsada" or transportation backbone, the jeepney became the republic's icon that represented the country in so many ways — from the streets to the merchandise.
But with the continuous evolution of technology, the jeepney has not been spared from calls of "modernization." Whether the jeepney should change its look to "modernize" or to remain as it is has become a hot topic for debate.
Established in 2018 by the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) aims to modernize the Philippines' public transport sector by addressing environmental, safety and efficiency concerns.
The modern jeepney may lessen air pollution as compared to traditional jeepney, but it is too expensive for regular Filipinos to buy. A modern jeepney costs about P2 million, but the government only promised P160,000 as subsidy.
Le’ Guider International Electronics Assembly, in a joint venture with the Philippines' Sarao Motors, recently introduced its version of the e-jeepney.
Its features include:
- 100% electric,
- 2-4 hours charging system plug anywhere,
- 140 KPH top speed,
- up to 120 kilometers per charge,
- solar charging capability,
- fully air-conditioned,
- power steering,
- 19 sitting capacity plus driver
- and water-resistant.
Its specification includes:
- 15.5KW permanent magnetic motor,
- 400A Lithium-Ion battery,
- built-in battery management system,
- vacuum braking system,
- computerized controller
- and multi-layer of protection and operations.
In contrast, here are the features of the traditional jeepney:
- a surplus engine of 4BE1,
- a 3.6L direct injection engine.
- It is a high-revving high output diesel on its VE-Rotary Zexel injection pump.
- Unlike the power steering of modern jeepneys, traditional ones have "pawis steering." This means that the traditional jeepney, which is not air-conditioned, can carry fresh fish and produce inside, which could be a big help for the jeepney's owners and to farmers and fishermen in transporting their produce.
