Tri, tri, tri again

MANILA, Philippines - The growth in popularity of triathlon events in the Philippines has been staggering. Since 1988, the Matabungkay Tri has grown into an industry with over 2,000 participants.

That’s why Vaseline Men is hosting the XTerra Philippines Off-Road Triathlon Series in Liloan, Cebu this March 2-3. Known as the qualifier for the world’s largest annual off-road triathlon sporting event, held in the Hawaiian island of Maui, the XTerra is a grueling challenge of open-water swimming, off-road biking and running across sharp coral, volcanic sand and slippery mud.

The XTerra Philippines Championship Weekend starts with two triathlon events on March 2: the XTerra Lite, a 500-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run; and the XTerra Philippines Championship trail, which features a 1.5-kilometer swim, 35-kilometer bike, and a 10-kilometer run. Capping off the rigorous weekend is a trail run on March 3, featuring three demanding courses: 21-kilometer, 10-kilometer, and 5-kilometer in the coral and mud-laden trails of picturesque Liloan. All this culminates in 40 winning slots for the XTerra World Championship 2013 in Maui, Hawaii, as well as prize money of US$15,000.

The Vaseline Men XTerra Philippines Off-Road Triathtlon Series is co-sponsored by Alaska, Summit Water, LBC, Gatorade, Canon, Aqua Sphere, David’s Salon, Multisport, Intercare, Rocktape, Timex, the Municipality of Liloan, Cebu, Smart Telecoms, Studio 23, and the Philippine STAR.
