MANILA, Philippines - A scant four months after his decisive knockout of Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao won his match against IBF World Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey, keeping the WBO World Welterweight title firmly in his corner, and further consolidating the growing legend of Manny Pacquiao.
His is the life, after all, that legends are made of: his meteoric rise from poverty through sheer grit, blood, sweat and tears; his extravagant generosity; his speed and power in the ring, no matter his fighting weight; even his joyful singing and penchant for staging “concerts” — all these endear him to Filipinos, who always love a good rags-to-riches story. With each punch he throws, or almost-shy answer he gives to interview questions, the people cheer on their beloved “People’s Champ.”
From his numerous endorsements to his inclusion in boxing video games, from extensive media coverage to his becoming the first Filipino athlete to appear on a postage stamp, people can’t seem to get enough of the Pacman. Even the sports watch made in his honor by world-renowned Swiss brand Victorinox Swiss Army has reached collector status, with the first two series sold out quickly.
In further tribute, VSA has launched another limited-edition watch — the Chrono Classic Pacman Limited Edition Series 3. This third series comes with a stainless steel bracelet and case, adding elegance to its sleek lines. The boxer icon still appears on the dial, this time in silver. Etched on the case back are the sun rays and stars — representing the Philippine flag — along with Manny’s face and celebrated fists.
Of course, this Series 3 watch comes with the same attention to detail and tech specs that have made the previous editions so popular. The impressive 40mm case comes with a screw-in case back and a scratch-resistant, anti-reflection sapphire crystal. The dial features three sub-dials that showcase the chronograph functions and a window of 4 o’clock shows the date. Luminous hands and numbers make telling time easier, and the integrated shaped chronograph pushers ease the start, stop and reset process. A double-O ring crown ensures the watch’s water resistance to 100 meters (330 feet).
The Series 3 Pacman watch is still being sold for P22,800, the same reasonable price as its predecessors, and is available at Lucerne, Chronos Swiss Gear and LTimestudio shops. Each watch comes with a souvenir boxing glove imprinted with Manny’s signature.
