Based on a scramble tournament format, the winning pair will be granted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent the Philippines in the international championship in Florida, home of legendary pro Jack Nicklaus himself!
As players from all over the world sought to win the championship title, Joel Ignacio, 2007 International Grand Champion and a dentist from the Philippines, described his experience as “an honor and once-in-a-lifetime achievement for an amateur golfer” like himself.
In 2008, Martin Ilagan and Beachie Abiera earned the right to play in Florida by besting all the other teams in the local leg of the tournament. They were a perfect match, securing a spot for the Philippines in the top four teams — a feat in itself given their handicap and Abiera being the only female in the elite field. “I’ve always liked competing ever since my days as a professional tennis player. When I saw that we had the chance to win, I decided to give it a shot,” quips Ilagan. They may have failed to defend the championship title but “the experience of joining an international tournament and being given first class treatment was one for the books. People still talk about it!” However, it was “meeting the legend, Jack Nicklaus” that was the main highlight, says Abiera.
Stay on top and ahead of the pack and take on the challenge to represent the country in this year’s Tournament of Champions. The Fourth Jack Nicklaus International Invitational will be held this June 15 at the Sherwood Hills Golf and Country Club, Governor’s Drive, Trece Martires City, Cavite.
