Time for Dad to meet the President at Myron’s

If shirts and watches don’t work for Dad anymore, take him to Myron’s where The President awaits him.

So commanding of attention, so imposing on the dinner table — I’m referring, of course, to Myron’s signature dish: the 500-gram US-certified Angus steak (P3,100), a hefty dish that’s charred on the outside and yet juicy on the inside. It goes well with Myron’s Rice, delicious fried rice made richer with steak drippings.

“It’s actually my dad’s favorite dish at Myron’s,” says chef and restaurateur Monica “Monique” Papa-Eugenio, who studied at the French and Culinary School in New York, and co-owns and runs Myron’s with her husband Ramon “Mon” Eugenio. “And if he were still around today, that’s what Mon and I would probably serve him — with J&B scotch on the rocks.”

For those who knew him, Myron Papa was a major player in the Makati Stock Exchange and was known to be a generous host to family, close friends, and business acquaintances.

“He always used food as a way to get people together,” Mon says of his father-in-law. “During Sunday lunches, he would order the best food, lots of it. There’s a quirky graciousness about him that endeared him to all of us.”

The restaurant that bears Myron’s name reflects the businessman’s love for la dolce vita, and a penchant for hearty hospitality. Monique’s husband, chef Mon, who graduated from the California Culinary Academy, thought it would be a natural fit to name their steak place after a man who provided joy and contentment through good food and wine.

Then again, we were baffled as to why the couple named the steak The President, and not after their dad.

“At first, we didn’t know what to call that particular steak. And then one day, President Noynoy Aquino walks into Myron’s restaurant in Rockwell,” explains Mon. “So we both decided to call it The President.”

Well, fitting enough because The President is fit not only for the leader of the land, but the head of our family as well  — Dad!

A Toast To Dad

Myron’s welcomes diners to its new home on the sixth floor of Ascott Residences in Makati with a new cocktail drink — the Marianito, a refreshing blend of vermouth, gin and a twist of lemon garnished with green olives  — inspired by the couple’s recent travels to San Sebastian, Spain.

Whet the appetite with savory bites, Txistorra Chorizo with black olives (P325), Spanish pork sausages with olives, and a cup of Cappuccino of Mushrooms.

We couldn’t get our forks off the Fusilli with Grilled Chicken and Bleu Cheese (P 415), which combines the delicate flavors of grilled chicken with the distinct sharp notes of the blue cheese; and the Instagrammable Tiger Prawns and US Sea Scallops with Roasted Pumpkin and Scallion Sauce (P990). It’s a light yet flavorful option for those who get intimidated by The President.

“We don’t have a special Father’s Day set menu, simply because our guests have their personal favorites at Myron’s. We don’t want to limit their choices,” says Monique.

But Myron’s does have a special treat for Dads dining with their families.

Ascott Residences guests availing of the Father’s Day room package will receive a 20-percent-discount dining coupon from Myron’s.

“Make it the most memorable Father’s Day dining experience with your Dad while you still have him,” advises Monique. “Dining out with my Dad is one of my favorite bonding activities with him. At a young age, he showed me that there’s more to the (culinary) world than what you’re so familiar with.”
