Meals cooked with love at Bambi’s Gourmet Kitchen

HEART TO HEART - Rica Lopez-de Jesus - The Philippine Star

Ever since I met Bambi Reyes she has always been so kind and generous. She loves to cook and she loves to spoil her family and friends with her delicious home-cooked dishes. She is very passionate about her cooking, going early in the morning to the market to buy her ingredients to make sure she uses the freshest seafood and meat. She is my daily text mate, sharing with me what she is cooking for the day or her latest finds in Rustan’s and — most importantly — alerting me to the next delivery of food coming over to the house. She always invites me to her house or else sends food over. We even formed a group called the “Food Tasting Group” since we are her guinea pigs and get together to try all her dishes. When I invite her over to the house to eat with us, she will always bring a dish or two that she cooked. The food is just overflowing and we are the lucky recipients of her latest concoctions.

After several years of enjoying her food, I finally convinced her to take her passion to the next level and share her talent by offering her dishes to others as a business. She started a few weeks ago and she already has corporate clients ordering her salted egg powder and salted egg sauce in bulk. Her kitchen has started taking orders for party platters and Bambi has been very busy.

She can cook many dishes and they are all good, but my favorite dishes are her truffle porcini mushroom pasta, cereal prawns, salted egg cereal prawns, toast chicken with apple porcini stuffing, osso bucco, creamy butter prawns, baked fish in fleur de sal, beef bourguignon, chocolate cake and her salted egg powder. She is continuously adding to the already long list of dishes she can cook.

The luckiest beneficiaries of her cooking are her dad and mom, who, to me, are Oscar Reyes and Edith Reyes. Bambi is the only daughter and she takes care of them so well, which is why Papa and Mama do not want Bambi to live elsewhere. Apparently, Bambi gets her cooking skills from her mom. “The one who I owe much of what I have become now, especially my cooking and baking skills, is my beautiful Mama, who’s been training me in cooking since I was six years old. She would let me accompany her to the wet market and teach me which was fresh and good quality. She would call me and let me watch her cook sukiyaki and tempura. She would ask me to help her stir her sauces, taste the dishes, grate cheeses, and she was as tough as chef Gordon Ramsay in the kitchen when I was the one taking control. Mama would be my worst critic and I shed buckets of tears when I was younger, but now I appreciate her more than ever for, if not for her being so strict in the kitchen, I wouldn’t have mastered the skills and tools that I needed in my cooking and baking. That’s why I love my mom so much even if we often bicker about things. She was and still the best teacher I ever had,” says Bambi.

Cooking at home for family and friends means cooking with love and cooking with care, and that is what Bambi’s cooking is all about.
