Spectrum at Raffles Hotel is a delicious Legoland

A Lego replica of Raffles and Fairmont Makati greets guests at Spectrum.

MANILA, Philippines - All your childhood dreams are valid — you may now eat Lego, at Raffles Makati, at least. Meant as a treat for kids, Spectrum has created a fun new Sunday family activity, Awesome Sunday Brunch at Spectrum, in which the usual Spectrum buffet area is transformed into a kids’ wonderland of edible Lego treats.

On the first Sunday of February, I found myself surrounded by children at the dessert area of the Spectrum buffet. Together, we surveyed the options — Lego Brick cookies, a giant lego red velvet cake, Lego-shaped chocolates, Lego savory sandwiches, and more. The little girl beside me picked up a Lego lollipop, then hopped away saying, “Best day ever!” I took a Lego chocolate mousse with a chocolate Lego man on top — along with other Spectrum favorites from their local and international menu.

This is the scene on Sundays at Spectrum for the month of February. It is transformed into a Lego exhibit, with a Lego Raffles and Fairmont Hotel model by the entrance, along with a toddler-size Lego character. On the second floor is a Lego play area where kids can watch Lego movies, build Lego creations that they can use to join the “My Own Creation” contest to win special prizes.

The kids looked like they were having fun, but frankly, adults in the room seemed even happier. Anyone who’s had a box of Lego bricks growing up will flip at the sight of edible Lego characters — we were always told not to put them in our mouth (with good reason), so it’s always been some kind of unfulfilled childhood curiosity. This Sunday treat from Spectrum brings out the little kid inside us (I know for a fact it was the grownups who kept taking photos of their Lego desserts).

Pastry chef Xavier Castello, who was in charge of creating all the Lego-inspired cakes and pastries, said, “The creation of Lego pastries, chocolates and desserts was a delight. Working with Lego, which is universally loved by children and adults, was inspiration enough. My team and I just got into the Lego universe and ended up with this amazing and whimsical buffet spread. You can see how guests love it by not only eating the sweets but taking photographs as well.”

Awesome Sunday Brunch is an alternative to the usual Valentine’s Day spread of candles and roses — imagine taking your date here instead! It’s almost certain: everything will be awesome.
