Paella, callos, laing at Corazon
For a taste of home, have a date with Dad at Corazon. Chef Florabel Co whips up timeless Hispano-Filipino cuisine that is well-loved by generations, and made even more sumptuous. Whether it’s callos, paella or the lechon kawali-topped laing, the dishes are bound to satisfy Dad’s palate and nourish his soul. Reminiscent of your grandmother’s grand feasts, the dishes are made with lots of love and flavor.
Hearty sandwiches, salads at Pages Deli
Pages Deli is the place to be if Dad is in the mood for hearty sandwiches and salads paired with wine. In this charming little restaurant — inspired by owner Jojo Paje and daughter Maita’s love for books — Dad can read his favorite book Gulliver’s Travels and eat it, too, as there’s a shrimp sandwich named after it.
German pasta, galettes at Spatzle
Spatzle, a modern European market cafe, offers European-inspired comfort food made fresh daily — from the pasta to the pizza dough. Best-sellers include spatzle (fresh German pasta), roesti (Swiss potato pancakes), and blints and galettes (thin-flour or buckwheat pancakes).
View allPizza, pasta and steak at Balboa
The family that eats meat together, steaks together at Balboa. Its best-selling Sinatra platter (P1,808) — US Angus Porterhouse steak with baked chicken and grilled Italian sausage — is big enough to share.
Named after the iconic movie character Rocky Balboa, the restaurant also takes pride in its healthy and delicious pizza and pasta offerings like the Prosciutto Mushroom and Arugula pizza and Fresh Spinach Tagliatelle.
Humba, bagnet at Zarzuela
Zarzuela adds a modern twist to well-loved Filipino dishes such as Iloilo's rellenong bangus, humba, bagnet and binagoongan, while still preserving the authentic local flavors.
Buttermilk fried chicken, grilled cheese sandwich at Kettle
At Kettle, Dad's favorite comfort food — fried chicken, hamburger and steak — get a gourmet upgrade. Take the case of the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. Executive chef Chiloy Santos marinates the chicken fillet in buttermilk overnight before frying. Also try the grilled cheese sandwich, which boasts four kinds of cheese.
Make-your-own bibimbap at Woo Galbi
At Woo Galbi, Dad can make his own bibimbap for only P420, or indulge in his favorite Korean dishes such as galbi jjim (beef stew), bulgogi or sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) as authentic as can be.
Jack Daniel’s pound cake at Wicked
Dad will surely love the Jack Daniel’s pound cake at Wicked, a dessert place where Dad can have his sweets with a shot of alcohol. This caramel-dense pound cake with roasted walnuts and toffee bits is topped with Jack Daniel’s caramel sauce.
Sausages, pork knuckles and beer at Brotzeit
Take Dad on a food trip to Germany in the blink of an eye at Brotzeit, which offers authentic Bavarian cuisine accompanied by world-famous German beers. “Brotzeit†is a Bavarian expression — “brot†is German for bread and “zeit†for time — referring to a small meal or snack accompanied by beer.
However, the serving portions at Brotzeit are large and platters for sharing are available for big groups like the Brotzeitplatte, which contains bread, pork knuckles and assorted German sausages.
Artisanal spreads, breads, salads at Epicurious
Epicurious, a one-stop deli, food emporium, cafe and culinary studio all rolled into one, is a place where Dad can have his food cooked just the way he wants it — just let him shop for the ingredients (at the food emporium) and have the Epicurious chefs cook the food according to his liking. Here, Dad will also have a field day shopping for locally and internationally sourced artisan products like coffee, fresh pasta, cheese, wines and charcuterie.
Burrata, organic mushrooms at Green Pastures
For a guilt-free treat, take Dad to Green Pastures, the farm-to-table, back-to-basics organic resto of Cyma chef Robby Goco. Here, most of the ingredients used are locally sourced, the use of MSG or canned ingredients is absolutely banned, and nearly all of the items are homemade. The homemade burrata — a mound of stark white cheese with chopped fresh basil, halved strawberries, and grape tomatoes, served with home-baked bread on the side — is so good I can eat it any time of the day. Also try the organic mushroom toast with quail eggs and ricotta.
L’Opera cake, eclair at Poetry & Prose
Poetry & Prose Patisserie offers classic French pastries — eclair, a rich chocolate ganache atop a light choux pastry filled with luscious cream; mille-feuille, delicate layers of puff pastries with vanilla-flavored cream in between each one, and L’Opera, an elaborate almond sponge cake, among others — fit for a king.
