Good food on the go

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Whether you’re packing food for a road or a plane trip, here are tips from kitchen favorite Glad to help prevent food from going bad while you’re on the go:

Prep squad. Plan your travel snacks and meals at least a week before the trip. Think about the needs of your companions —are picky kids coming along, or grandparents who might have dietary restrictions? Also consider the mode of transportation. You can consume more drinks and soft foods during a long drive, but perhaps not on a plane ride.

Creative eats. Not everyone appreciates airline food, and sometimes flight delays happen, so go ahead and plan your own “inflight menu” that doesn’t need knives or forks, such as sandwiches or savory wraps. Or, if traveling by car, you can create your very own trail mix — your packed snack can include your favorite dried fruits and nuts.

Foolproof food.  According to the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), travelers can bring less perishable meals like adobo and grilled fish. The food science behind this advice is that the acid present in marinades using vinegar and citrus fruits actually helps preserve food. FNRI warns against cross-contamination, though — make sure not to reuse containers in which you placed raw meat, poultry, or fish.

The FNRI also recommends snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables during a trip. To protect the freshness of fruits like apples, for instance, soak the slices in a mixture of lemon juice and water for three to five minutes before draining and placing in a zipper bag.

Store smart. Whether carrying snacks on the way to your holiday destination or packing leftover food from the trip, choose air-tight GladWare food protection containers and Glad zipper bags to keep food fresher, longer. These products seal tightly and are made of durable material that won’t rip or snag, preventing spills and messes.

For edibles that can’t be pressed and squeezed, use GladWare food-protection containers that come in different sizes to suit your needs. Plus, they are stackable so you can pile them neatly inside a carrier or cooler. Double-lock-seal Glad zipper bags, meanwhile, make great travel companions for compact food. These bags can be compressed, thereby taking up less space. You’ll also have quick and convenient access to your sandwiches and munchies like cookies, nuts, and fruits like seedless grapes.
