Cebu celebrates National Day of Belgium
Belgian Ambassador Christian Meerschman and Honorary Consul in Cebu Enrique Benedicto with his ever-supportive wife Helena played hosts to the National Day celebration of Belgium at the Manila Room of the Marco Polo Plaza hotel.
Representing the local government were Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Meerschman expressed gratitude for the friendly relations between the Philippines and Belgium. In response, Governor Garcia assured the Ambassador and Belgian residents of Cebu of the islands’ continued support.
Highlight of the event was the conferment of the honorific distinction of officer in the Order of Leopold, the highest award bestowed on a civilian, to Consul Enrique Benedicto by first secretary Josef Adriaan Nauts.
This prestigious medal given by King Albert II by a royal decree serves as a token of appreciation for the service rendered to the Kingdom of Belgium.
Among the leaders of the active civic organizations present were Hernan Streegan, Ramon Sebastian, Roger Lim and Ted Locson. The hotel industry was represented by Hans Hauri, president, Hotel Resort and Restaurant Association and GM of Marco Polo Plaza and Gary Garcia, GM of BE Hotel.
Guests enjoyed the sumptuous spread of Belgian favorites prepared by the property’s executive chef Karl Beter.
