MANILA, Philippines - At a time when a rich selection of smoked salmon, foie gras and truffles starts to enter our vocabulary and our mouths, still nothing beats the flavor of simple, hearty food. From our mom’s chicken soup to fried chicken and sinangag, real food brings out the zest in us. Ask chef Mitchie Sison.
As co-host of the now-defunct cooking show Ka-Toque on QTV 11, chef Mitchie can whip up comfort food but with a twist. How else would you define her champorado with orange zest and tuyo cookies?
“I noticed that Filipinos try to stick with recipes — they’re afraid to experiment. But I think it’s more fun to experiment and to think out of the box,” the bubbly 25-year-old chef muses.
Chef Mitchie came from a foodie family. While her parents did not have a culinary background (her father is an engineer and her mother is a psychology graduate), they created the tapsilog concept.
Unable to find a good restaurant that served homey meals, the Sison couple started their own restaurant and in the process of serving tapa, sinangag and itlog to hungry patrons, tapsilog was born.
With a degree in B.S. Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, chef Mitchie was sent by the school to audition for the new show QTV 11 was cooking up and the rest, as they say, is history.
While Chef Mitchie was still doing the cooking show, she appeared in various shows and food magazines. Hong Kong cookware brand Sunnex also saw the potential of the young chef, taking her in to become a chief endorser for Sunnex Philippines.
Since 2008, chef Mitchie has been doing cooking demos for Sunnex, expanding her forte to include savory dishes and even delectable baby food.
“Our cookware has no dayoff, we use it every day so we might as well invest in quality cookware that can withstand use,” chef Mitchie says. She particularly recommends Sunnex. “Sunnex has a new line of quality cookware that will help make cooking comfortable. And we all should wait for that,” she adds.
