Are you sweet or savory?

STILL TALKING - Enrico Miguel T. Subido -

Are you sweet or savory? Although at the onset some may find this question a bit personal and maybe even somewhat untoward, please allow me to remind you all that it is a query about food. And it’s not an easy one considering all the good sweet and savory food out there.

Mood has a lot to do with how this question could be answered: it all really depends. One moment you could be craving a slice of rich chocolate cake; the next, a thick wedge of Ilocano bagnet. The fundamental demand for either sweet or savory is equally as great as the other.

It gets even more confusing when, at times, our taste buds look for both flavors in the same dish. One caveman way of satiating this type of hunger would be to make a chicken/cheese/Snickers fajita, or something like that. Use your imagination, the sky is the limit. But the weirdness of such a funky concoction, not to mention the trouble it would take to make it, is a bit of a put-off.

The sweet-savory issue is one that will be with man for as long as he eats. One flavor will always claim to be superior to the other. This year though, it seems steps have been taken to abate further struggles between the two camps. Making its Asian launch right here in the Philippines, popular doughnut brand Krispy Kreme has introduced its Baked Creations line to stem any more bickering between sweet lovers and savory supporters.

Krispy Kreme’s is offering two options: Kruffins, an American-style handmade muffins-with-a-hole, are filled with rich and delicious fruits, nuts or chocolate. These include Double Chocolate, Apple Streussel, Blueberry and Classic Kruffins; and Pull Aparts — North Carolina’s original hand-rolled balls of dough, pulled apart and laid out to form a doughnut- like sweet bread. These Pull Aparts are filled with sweet or savory varieties such as Cheese, Bacon & Cheese, Sausage & Cheese, and Cinnamon.

“The introduction of the Baked Creations of Krispy Kreme here in the country is our way of showing our eagerness to give Filipinos something delightfully new to share and enjoy every day,” says Mark Gamboa, marketing manager of Krispy Kreme.

The choices become clearer. If you want something sweet, try a Kruffin. The soft dough and rich toppings are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The Double Chocolate Kruffins are delightfully dangerous. If you want something savory, go for a Pull Apart. The semi-sweet dough adds a nice touch when combined with salty flavors.

“The Pull Apart was actually invented some time in the 1950s in America, and it’s wonderful that it has found its way here. We felt that the Philippines would be a great place to launch these new products because you guys know your flavors,” says Rick Cavanaugh from the development team of Krispy Kreme in the US.

Sweet, savory, sugary, salty, Kruffin, Pull Apart? With all these delicious developments, who says you have to choose only one?
