It's a cookie, it's a cake, it's a cookie ice cream cake!

- Julie Cabatit-Alegre -

MANILA, Philippines – It sounds almost like a challenge, but it’s an honest-to-goodness offer and when you see it happen, it can actually be quite entertaining. “Served upside-down or it’s free!” At Dairy Queen, that’s how the Blizzard is served, simply to prove its thickness. For those few seconds, it seems to defy gravity, since not a single drop escapes from the inverted cup of rich creamy goodness.

It is so thick, a straw won’t do. You need to eat it with a spoon

What makes the Blizzard treats of Dairy Queen, the pioneer in soft serve ice cream, outstanding is the variety of sweet delights that are mixed in with the vanilla ice cream base, such as bits of premium cookies, cheesecakes, brownies, strawberry and chocolates. Dairy Queen introduces a new flavor every two months.  Not surprisingly, among its most popular flavors is Oreo Cookie. How can anyone go wrong with Oreos? It is said to be the best-selling cookie in the US. Well, those who love it will be glad to know that Dairy Queen collaborated with Kraft Foods (Phils.) Inc. to create the limited “cookie jar” edition of the Double Stuf (yes, spelled with one “f”) Oreo, as well as the Chips Ahoy! Blizzard flavors.

Double Stuf Oreo cookies have about twice the normal amount of white cream filling of a traditional Oreo. Generous bits, mixed in with Dairy Queen’s creamy vanilla ice cream, makes this Blizzard Treat doubly delicious. Your other choice would be Dairy Queen’s soft serve vanilla ice cream, blended with the chunky chocolate chip goodness of Chips Ahoy! cookies. And if that is not enough, there is also the new Chips Ahoy! Blizzard cake, the new 100-percent ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. Imagine, layers of creamy vanilla soft serve, with fudge and chocolate cookie crunch in the center, and Chips Ahoy! Blizzard on top. All that’s left for you to do is indulge!

Dairy Queen’s regular treats include cones, sundaes, shakes, and waffle treats as well as citrus coolers and the moolatte (that’s creamy DQ soft serve ice cream blended with coffee, ice and topped with whipped cream). A new product is the guyabano premium fruit smoothie. “This is part of our ‘straw promotions,’ where we introduce new flavors regularly, together with our Blizzards,” says Mitzi Amurao, DQ marketing officer.

There is no right time for a Dairy Queen treat because anytime is the right time, just for the fun of it. Today, the Dairy Queen system is the largest ice cream chain, with 6,000 restaurants around the world. In the Philippines, Dairy Queen is owned and operated by the Araneta Group, the same local franchise owners of Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

There are 20 Dairy Queen’s all over Metro Manila, among them, at the Araneta Coliseum Circle, Farmer Plaza, Gateway Mall, SM Mega Mall, SM City, SM Southmall, Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Manila, Eastwood City, TriNoma, Glorietta 4 and Alabang Town Center.
