MANILA, Philippines – “Diabetes is now an epidemic,” announced Dr. Maria Honolina Gomez, president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Philippine Chapter. “However, it is a disease born out of an unhealthy lifestyle.”
Dr. Gomez encouraged everyone to take control of their health and make positive changes before it’s too late during the Endocrine Awareness Day held recently at the San Juan Gym.
Diabetes is currently the ninth leading cause of death in the Philippines, where one in 25 people is afflicted with the disease.
It is estimated that in 15 years, up to eight million Filipinos will suffer from diabetes, which is likewise the leading cause of adult blindness, kidney failure, and non-traumatic limb loss.
Organized by AACE and Abbott Nutrition International (ANI), the Endocrine Awareness Day is aimed at spreading awareness about the medical challenges associated with diabetes.
ANI set up a Glucerna SR booth to underscore the importance of daily-living management.
Glucerna SR is a low-calorie meal replacement with a unique carbohydrate system that is slowly digested for optimal glucose levels. This clinically proven supplement also features a high MUFA and low SFA fat blend to help improve lipid and glucose levels.
