When your refrigerator thinks of you

- Joy Angelica Subido, Joy Angelica Subido, Karla Alindahao -
Extensive research undertaken by Electrolux showed that Asian consumers have specific requirements for food preservation. Consumers felt there was a need for food retain its original value, taste, and flavor. They worried about the contamination of cooked food caused by the improper storage of raw food. They also wanted to safely extend the shelf life of food.

The various needs of the consumers were the motives for Electrolux in developing the innovations for their new line of refrigerators. "Our tag line is ‘Thinking of You’," explains Electrolux Philippines Inc. general manager Thomas Hong. "We are not only selling technology, we are also selling benefits. When the customer looks at our product and says, ‘This is really what I want,’ we say, we were thinking of you when we made this product."

The added features of the new Electrolux refrigerators would please all who love to cook and eat. Those who have had the unwelcome experience of having their breads and pastries contaminated with the smell of viands will appreciate the Deo Fresh feature, a system of dual deodorizers that attracts and absorbs stray odors. To further ensure that other stored items do not imbibe strong smells from other food stored in the refrigerator, odor control bins have been incorporated and a multi-airflow cooling system that constantly filters and circulates air throughout the entire refrigerator and freezer is in place.

Your current refrigerator has problems with humidity control if you find that vegetables dry up quickly or are damaged and turned mushy by a coat of frost. This is an unlikely occurrence in an Electrolux refrigerator with its humidity controlled crisper, an innovation that is meant to slow down the wilting of vegetables and which keeps fruits ripe and crisp. In addition, a frost-free freezer maintains ideal temperatures to keep food items fresh.

Filipinos who love condiments and preserves usually keep a variety of these in their refrigerators. Adjustable shelves offer more flexibility in food storage, while adjustable bins in the doors can move side to side or up and down to make room for your bottles of buro, achara and sawsawan. The Electrolux refrigerator also has unique bag clips in the doors where one can attach bags of sili, Chinese chorizo, and various items straight from the marketplace.

An interesting Electrolux innovation is an alarm to alert you if the refrigerator door is not properly closed. For families with young children or teenagers who rush about and slam the refrigerator door without making that it shut, this is a very useful feature both in avoiding food spoilage and increasing energy efficiency in the home. With the new features it is easy to see why Electrolux is a leading kitchen appliance innovator worldwide. By focusing on innovations that are thoughtfully designed and based on consumer insight, the company meets the real needs of their consumers.

Indeed, the refrigerator is a necessary kitchen appliance for people who love to cook. Unless one is a professional chef who requires fresh ingredients daily, buying enough food supplies to last several days and storing these in a trusty refrigerator is the most practical option. Likewise, those who prefer to forgo cooking and store up on edible treats know that having these handy in the refrigerators makes matters much simpler, especially when the cravings hit them at odd hours.

For me however, the insight that the refrigerator is a vital, much-used appliance in my household came about unexpectedly one day when I misplaced my mobile phone. After calling it numerous times, rummaging through all my bags, pockets and desk drawers, searching the car, scouring the garage and driveway and practically running all over the house to find it, I finally resigned myself to the fact that it was irrevocably lost. Sweating, hyperventilating and upset, I headed for the refrigerator to get a cold drink before calling the telephone company to have the number barred. And what do you know? The missing phone was inside the refrigerator — sitting in the butter bin. The refrigerator is really important!
