Olive Borromeo, the hard working partner in Cebu of Globe Cruises, invited a select group of frequent Cebuano travelers, who simply love to travel in style, to spend a leisurely morning aboard m/s Amsterdam, the newest ship of Holland America Liner, when it made a call at the Cebu International Port a few weeks ago.

David Giersdorf
, senior vice president for marketing and sales, welcomed the guests, as he proudly led us to the theater for an armchair journey to some of the 280 ports of call and scenic cruising destinations.

We "sailed" through the vast Pacific Ocean, with the Polynesian isles all just over the horizon, saw the magic of Maui, exotic Asia, the Japan of the Shoguns and Marco Polo’s mysterious Middle Kingdom. We even did the gulf of Alaska with its massive glaciers.

We were then "transported" to the Caribbean, the gateway to the sun. The adventure went on until we heard it was time to move on.

An actual tour of the ship followed. We saw an extensive museum-quality collection of arts and antiques. We were astonished by the on-board facilities and marveled at the program of daily round-the-clock activities. And everywhere, we were greeted by the warm and friendly Filipino crew and staff.

As we stood on the deck, we wondered what better way to travel than in unconditional, impeccable service. The answer is Holland America Lines, the best way to discover the world’s extraordinary destinations – on a six-star cruise!

The more I get to know Christiane Wasfy, the always-involved-in-noble causes general manger of the Cebu City Marriott Hotel, the more I appreciate her.

At a recent lunch she hosted for European journalists from the United Kingdom, Germany and France, who were in town to experience firsthand what Cebu has to offer, we learned from others who were present that the hotel just gave a check to SOS Children’s Village Philippine director Danny Latonio in support of the organization’s village expansion project.

When asked to confirm what we had earlier heard, she said, "We would like to contribute to the upliftment of people’s lives, especially the young ones. Through funds we have raised, we hope to further the development of the SOS Children’s Village in the Philippines and see more young people reach their goals in life."

Christiane Wasfy, you are indeed an active member of Cebu’s ever-growing expat community with a heart. We salute you!
