5 things to consider when choosing skincare products
MANILA, Philippines — With all of the products available online, and the complicated 15-step routines of some skincare regimens, it’s easy to get confused – and even overwhelmed - when choosing skincare for you. (Understanding your own skin chemistry is another confusing matter altogether.)
In an interview with Philstar.com, Helen Ho, brand manager of Taiwanese skincare brand 23.5°N, shared some tips and reminders when choosing skincare for Filipina skin:
- If you don’t want your skin to break out, avoid products that have fragrances as these are the No. 1 skin irritants, and not alcohol as many believe.
- Consider the formulations of different brands. Western/ European brands tend to be heavier and creamier compared to other Asian products as these aim to hydrate and protect skin from extreme cold and dry heat in the West.
Korean brands, on the other hand, are formulated to protect skin from chilly weather. So do consider that even if a product is branded as “for Asian skin,” this may not necessarily mean that it will complement your specific skin chemistry.
3. Filipinos live in humid, tropical weather, so it’s good to invest in skincare products that are light and non-greasy. Your skincare should have that balance of oil and water-based ingredients that nourish, moisturize and protect.
4. As a rule of thumb, go for skincare products that have fewer, more natural ingredients. (Many of the typical products on the beauty shelves have around 40 to 50 ingredients). Read labels and check out the what’s used in the formula. The more ingredients, the greater possibility that the product may irritate skin.
5. If you have particularly sensitive skin, choose skincare products that are free of fragrance, artificial coloring, alcohol and parabens.
Did you know that wearing sunscreen inside is just as important as wearing it outside? Even indoors, you're still exposed to skin-damaging light like UVA, UVB and blue light from screens!
Protect your skin with the Japanese-formulated sunscreens from Skin Aqua, which shield against UVA, UVB and blue light from mobile devices and computer screens. Choose between the Supermoisure Essence, a light liquid with three types of Hyaluronic Acis and Vitamin C; or Supermoisture Gel, a hydrating formula with nine moisturizing ingredients.
Brighten out an uneven skintone and enjoy broad-spectrum UV protection and 5-in-1 benefits, including anti-blue light and moisturization. Skin Aqua is available at the official Mentholatum stores in Lazada and Shopee.
When you choose products that use natural and organic ingredients, you can feel more confident that your skin will respond more positively.
