Uniqlo sues Shein over alleged copy of popular shoulder bag
MANILA, Philippines — Japanese brand Uniqlo has filed a lawsuit against operators of the retail brand Shein for allegedly copying its round mini shoulder bag.
Fast Retailing Co. Ltd, operator of Uniqlo, has filed a case against Shein operators Roadget Business Pte. Ltd., Fashion Choice Pte. Ltd. and SHEIN JAPAN Co. Ltd on Dec. 28, 2023 before the Tokyo District Court.
The case cited that the defendants violated the Unfair Competition Prevention Act. Uniqlo is demanding the immediate stop of the sales of the "imitation products" as well as compensation for the damages it incurred as a result of the sales of the said products.
Uniqlo said in its statement that it has determined that the form of the "imitation products" sold by Shein "closely resembles" its products.
Uniqlo's round mini shoulder bag has been named the hottest product of summer 2023 by fashion technology company and shopping app Lyst.
Fondly called as the Dumpling bag by fans, its compact style has been a popular pick for many casual and fashionable individuals. It can be worn as a shoulder bag or as a crossbody bag with adjustrable straps and water-repellent finish.
It retails for P790 and comes in many colors, including printed ones featuring its collaboration with American pop artist Keith Haring.
